Big Ten touring team opens play Saturday in Germany

[AUG. 8, 2002]  PARK RIDGE — The Big Ten’s foreign tour team in men’s basketball departs for Germany today as head coach Bill Self of Illinois prepares to lead the squad on a five-game trip through Germany, Belgium and the Netherlands. Self’s team, which includes 12 players from 11 league schools, will be abroad through Aug. 18 before returning home.

The schedule for the touring team has been slightly changed, as the squad will now open play against the Tus Treis-Karden Basketball Club in Treis-Karden, Germany, on Saturday.

The second game will pit the Big Ten team against the Telecom Basketball Club on Sunday at the Hardtberghalle Sports Hall in Bonn, Germany.

The squad will take Monday off to travel to Brussels, Belgium, before continuing the tour with a game on Tuesday versus the Leige Basketball Club at the Country Hall Du Sart Tilman.

Wednesday will offer a one-day break for the team before they wrap up the Belgian portion of the trip on Thursday with a contest against the Spirou Charleroi Basketball Club at the Salle Omnisports Complexe Sportif in Charleroi, Belgium.

The conference contingent will depart for Amsterdam, the Netherlands, on Friday for the tour finale occurring on Saturday, when the Big Ten squad takes on the Ricoh Astronauts Basketball Club.

The team returns to the United States on Sunday, August 18.

Quick mutterings

By Jeff Mayfield

[JULY 29, 2002]  I have to admit that I turned the TV off long before the Cardinals stunned the Cubs 10-9 last night on Edgar Renteria’s three-run walk-off bomb! The Redbirds scored six times in the bottom of the ninth to finish off a near-perfect day! Cards are now five games in front of the Reds and six ahead of the Astros.

Ozzie Smith was the only player inducted to the Hall of Fame on Sunday as well. I didn’t get to catch his acceptance speech, but friends said it was hilarious and a wonderful moment… and some of those guys are Cubs fans!

Lance Armstrong won his fourth Tour de France. He just must be the biggest stud in that sport.

Didn’t see much of the men’s golf tourneys this weekend, but the women’s play was outstanding. I believe Park won in a sudden death playoff. Kelli Kuhene fizzled the last two days, and Annika almost came back to win again. I really recommend that you go out and see these ladies play when they come to Springfield. It’s worth the price of admission!
