LDC -- 125 years of history ending

8-29-02

To the editor:

On 8-31-02, 125 years of mental health care at Lincoln Developmental Center ceases at 2 p.m.

I say to all of the fine, dedicated staff, BE PROUD! Thank you for letting me be part of an empathetic and compassionate team. Life is taking some horrendous turns and filthy, stinking politics have not just ruined LDC but cast blight over the staff. The names that we were called were not fair; the "stigma" attached to LDC was all part of the process to shutter us. IN SPITE OF ALL OF THAT ... BE PROUD!

We gave the monsters that destroyed a fine institution a hell of a fight. Thanks to our union for fighting for what is right; thank you to the few, caring politicians who helped us. WE WILL remember in November! Thank you, parents, for believing in us and fighting the fight with us. You, who knew better than anyone what kind of care was provided, fought a great battle.

Public Health was still harassing us as of 8/24/02. Management is continuing to act stupid, not allowing staff to take their own purchased items home. "What was brought on grounds stays on grounds," says management. We continue to come to work in these last few weeks of getting our bones picked clean by the vultures in moving vans hauling everything to other facilities.

Overwhelming sadness prevails when I watch these vans pull up -- nothing can describe the feeling of desolate emptiness that the shell of the building evokes.

Saturday is not only a sad day for Lincoln and those affiliated with LDC -- it is the beginning of the demise of mental health facilities. The "giant" has been conquered, the rest will surely be not far behind.
