LC soccer
clinic to benefit Pettijohn family
[SEPT.
5, 2002]
Lincoln College men’s soccer
coach Mark Howard will once again host a fall clinic at the
Lincoln College soccer fields for
kindergarten through eighth-grade students.
|
The sessions will be Sept. 6 and Sept.
20 from 6:15 to 7:30 p.m. A fee of $5 per child will be required for
participation.
Coach Howard stated, "We will be
donating all of the funds raised from this clinic to the Pettijohn
family to help secure their family future. Domino’s has been a
sponsor of our tournament for several years, and this is one way we
(as a college) can help repay them for their loyalty."
Andrew Pettijohn was recently killed in
an automobile accident and was the owner of the Domino’s franchise
in Lincoln.
Anyone
interested in more information can contact Howard at Lincoln
College.

LC vs.
Springfield College in volleyball
[SEPT.
5, 2002]
Springfield College of
Illinois handed the Lincoln College a five-set defeat in volleyball
at Springfield Wednesday night. The Lynx are now 1-3 for the season
and will play in the McKendree tournament Friday and Saturday.
|
Coach Mark Tippett said, "We played
hard and could have won the contest. The key game was the third,
when the score went back and forth and we ended up losing 30-32.
The two teams were very evenly matched. If we intend to stay with
the good teams, we are going to need to sharpen our defensive skills
a little more."
Springfield won the first set 30-19
before Lincoln came back to take the second set 30-26. Springfield
won the crucial third set, and the Lynx then posted a 30-25 win to
send the match to a fifth and final match, which Springfield won
15-12.
Jessica
Livezey led the Lynx with 15 kills, 10 points and four blocks. Mandi
Dean contributed 11 kills, three digs and three blocks, while Amanda
Hanson was credited with 10 kills and seven blocks.

Thank You
To Lincoln Developmental Center
employees:
The Lincoln Parents'
Association would like to express our sincere appreciation for the
excellent care you have given our loved ones over the years. You
chose to make a career in caring for the most fragile of individuals
with disabilities. For this, we are most grateful.
The
stress of this past year has been almost unbearable for you and for
us. In spite of poor management, politics and constant scrutiny, you
have maintained your excellent level of care. There are not enough
words to express our thanks.
Sincerely,
Members of the

Redbirds meet
two top 20 teams in Wisconsin
[SEPT.
5, 2002]
When she thinks about it,
Illinois State volleyball coach Sharon Dingman believes having a
young team is an advantage going into a week where it meets three of
the nation’s top 20 ranked teams.
|
Illinois State, 2-1, plays No. 16
Wisconsin, 2-1, at 7 p.m. Friday and No. 17 Texas A&M, 3-0, at 10
a.m. Saturday at the InnTowner Classic in Madison, Wis. After a
Saturday afternoon exhibition match with the University of Montreal,
the Redbirds return home for a Wednesday match at 7 p.m. in Redbird
Arena vs. No. 1 Stanford.
"I think it’s a benefit that our
players are so young," said Dingman. "They just want to go out there
and play, and I think they proved that last weekend. It’s good
experience."
Even though Dingman believes her
freshman-laden squad may lack the sophistication to be intimidated
by one of the nation’s toughest non-conference schedules, she
appreciates the fact that her senior leadership — Jenny Kabbes and
Erin Jones — has the situation in perspective.
"We have shown that, for as young as we
are, we can play with composure," said Dingman. "Jenny and Erin are
our stabilizing influence. They’ve been around and understand what
it takes to get the job done."
Wisconsin and Texas A&M are traditional
powers. Under the leadership of former Illinois State assistant
coach Pete Waite, the Badgers began the season ranked No. 10 in the
nation. Laurie Corbelli’s Texas A&M teams are long-standing powers
in the Big 12, one of the nation’s strongest conferences.
Dingman knows that her team’s offense,
off to a good start at home under the leadership of setter Kelly
Rikli, will be challenged by those ranked teams.
[to top of second column in this
article]
|
"Kelly is doing a very good job," said
Dingman. "Our hitters are making good decisions when to go for the
kill and when to keep the ball in play."
NOTES: The
Redbirds have added a walk-on player. Freshman Kristin Vandry, a
5-foot-8 former Queen of Peace High School star, has joined the team
as a defensive specialist and outside hitter. ... A recheck of
attendance figures from last weekend’s Barker GMC Classic has
resulted in a correction of the figure announced on Friday. The
session’s actual attendance was 2,236, bringing the three-session
tournament total to 4,557. ... Illinois State’s RPI has to be
looking good. Thanks to a powerful non-conference schedule and a
fast start by Missouri Valley Conference partners, the Redbirds’
opponents’ total record is 43-20 (.683) when not playing Illinois
State.

Labor Day mutterings
By Jeff Mayfield
[SEPT. 3, 2002]
Do not count me among the
scoffing fans of the Lincoln Railer football squad. I thought they
made positive strides on Friday night. And yes, I was disappointed
that they didn’t win, but not any more disappointed than those young
men and their coaching staff were when they came off the field. It
takes time to build a program and this group is improving. |
You wonder, what kind of a difference
might Derek Schrader have made in that game?
If I was to be critical (and as a
former coach, I never cared much for second-guessing), I wondered if
Lincoln would go conservative or aggressive in a tight ballgame.
Many people will criticize either choice. I’m too much of a gambler
when it comes to playing sports, so I usually go aggressive.
However, the Railers looked (although we could be more than wrong,
as that has happened to us once before) like they took a more
conservative route. Sometimes you can shorten the game with that
approach and then hope for something good to happen. With a tough
schedule in the weeks ahead that may be a good approach.
I’m sorry for our guys this past week;
I believe they deserved a better fate!

The Rail was all Patricia
Meunier-Lebouc this past weekend. She was on fire from wire to wire.
When you open with a 64 and finish to win with a 67, you are playing
a game in which I am not familiar! Meunier-Lebouc, who has won
several times on the European tour, carded her first-ever LPGA tour
victory on Sunday. And she did so by being as cool as the other side
of the pillow!
The LDN followed Jennifer Rosales, who
fired a closing 65; Candie Kung, who was playing great for a while;
and Amy Fruwirth, who was really giving us a lot of insights. As she
struggled with her swing, she approached us after a wayward driver
tee shot. I asked her if she could feel the problems somewhere in
her swing or if the outcome was just something that happened. She
said, "No, that’s just my swing." She has a very good demeanor for
this sport.
The LPGAers may well be the most
accessible athletes of any sport.
Is there anyone more colorful than
Michelle McGann?

The Cardinals picked up Jamey Wright,
who’s already posted a Redbird victory, from the Milwaukee Brewers.
I didn’t know they had arms to spare???
The Cardinals also acquired Jeff
Fassero from Chicago. Thank you, Cubbies.

LCC looked rather impressive in their
opening-night win over Hannibal-LaGrange in straight sets before a
large, raucous crowd!
• • •
I didn’t get to see it, but I heard
LCHS soccer teams looked quite impressive in their most recent wins
as well.
• • •
How ’bout those Oakland A’s? BTW, they
are a team that I followed as a kid. If you ever dig into our
archives, look what the LDN said about Art Howe early in the season
even when he was under fire… And you don’t even pay a subscription
for our inside scoops!

Thank you to the many of you who have
made gracious comments to Greg and me following our first episode of
"Fandamonium!" We really want to cover the things that you
want covered and the stuff that you want to talk about. We’ve got
great sponsors and great giveaways, so give us a call with your
questions or comments. The holiday scrapped this week’s show, but
we’ll return next Monday night, following the opening of the NFL
season and leading you into the first evening of "Monday Night
Football."

There’s lots
of other stuff happening in sports, but it’s late and I’m tired…
Have a super week, everybody!
