WL-B girls, Hartsburg boys win local track meet

[APRIL 12, 2003]  West Lincoln-Broadwell and Hartsburg-Emden squared off in a dual track meet Thursday at the WL-B track complex. Well before sunset the dual was in the books. The WL-B girls won both the seventh- and eighth-grade competitions by wide margins, while the Hartem boys won both levels of competition in closely contested action.

The WL-B eighth-grade girls won their portion of the meet by a whopping score of 50-5, while their seventh-grade counterparts took home a 78-31 victory. In the eighth-grade competition, WL-B girls got two individual firsts from Natalie Boward (long jump and high jump) and Melissa Ramlow (hurdles and 100), firsts from its 4x100 and 4x200 relay teams, and first place in the 400 meter from Emily Hilgendorf. The seventh-graders picked up three individual firsts from Stacy Elliot (hurdles, 400 and high jump), two firsts from Hilary Hobler (100 and long jump), and additional first-place points from Kylie Sparks (200), Amy Ramlow (800), Samantha Green (discus) and its 4x100, 4x200 and 4x 400 relay teams.

The Hartem seventh-grade girls took first-place finishes in the 1,600, won by Cross, and the shot put, won by Schneider. The Hartem eighth grade was able to manage only one first-place finish, and that was in the shot put, where Olson had the winning throw of 32-9.

The Hartem boys won hotly contested competitions in both the seventh- and eighth-grade portions of the meet. The eighth-grade Hartem boys finished with 66, while WL-B had 55. The seventh-grade results were almost equally as close as Hartem pulled off the win 70-55.

In the eighth-grade action Hartem boys garnered first-places finishes in the hurdles, 400, 800, 4x200, 4x400, long jump and high jump competitions. WL-B had first-place finishes in the 100 (Schreiber), 1,600 (Farmer), 4x100 relay, 200 (Leslie), shot put (S. Fink) and discus (Ryan Sanders).

The seventh-grade boys ran, jumped and threw to the following first-place wins: Hartem won first place in the 100, 400, 200, 800, 4x200, long jump, high jump and shot put. The seventh-grade WL-B boys captured first place in the hurdles (C. Fink), 1,600 (Leslie), 4x100 relay, 4x400 relay and in the discus (Bruns).

All WL-B teams are in action again next Tuesday at Midwest Central beginning at 4 p.m.
