LDN: This was
your first day of practice (Wednesday). What are your thoughts on
the upcoming season?
Coach Oaks: We
are excited, and we are hoping to take the next step on making the
football program a winner. We took some steps last year in getting a
few victories, and hopefully we can improve on that this year. It’s
going to take a lot of hard work in the next two weeks. The guys
have worked real hard in the off-season and I’m pretty pleased in
their physical development this last year, and all we need to do now
is to transition that over to the field.
LDN: What are
your predictions for this season?
Coach Oaks: We
always take them one game at a time and it’s always hard to say. We
have our work cut out for us. We have to open up with three road
games, and those are three key games for us because all of them are
respectable opponents and getting off to a good start is critical to
having a good season. We are going to have to be road warriors in
the early going, and if we can do that, we have a real good chance
of having a good season. … I think we have made some real headway in
terms of being competitive, and now the key is, can we get over the
hump and start winning some of those close games. We have a
legitimate chance of doing anything from making the playoffs with
winning five games to having trouble to winning one or two, and it
all depends on how we can get started off.

LDN: Are other
teams in the Central State Eight going to change their mind-set when
they play Lincoln?
Coach Oaks: Yes, I think last year
that we showed that we can play with some people. We played with
most teams on our schedule, not all of them, and hopefully we can
play with all of them this year, and at least make them prepare for
us on a weekly basis. I think that we are earning respect throughout
the conference.
