Laurine Keys

Laurine Keys, 89, of Lincoln died Monday, Jan. 27, 2003, at 1:30 a.m. at Abraham Lincoln Memorial Hospital.

Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday and services at 11 a.m. Wednesday, both at Holland and Barry Funeral Home in Lincoln. The Rev. Terry Davis will officiate for the funeral.

Burial will be in New Union Cemetery, Lincoln.

Mrs. Keys resided at Maple Ridge Care Centre. She had been a sales clerk at JCPenney in Lincoln and also worked at the Playhouse Day Care Center.

She was born on June 25, 1913, in Tennessee to Edward and Daisy Gelsthorp Reichle. She married William A. Keys on Aug. 9, 1936, in Beason. He preceded her in death on May 11, 1991.

She was also preceded in death by one daughter, Phyllis Elaine Keys, and one brother, Claude Reichle.

Survivors include one son, William E. (Bill) Keys of Lincoln; one daughter, Susan Vocek of Spring, Texas; eight grandchildren, Kevin and Tom Franz  and Kingsley Christopher Keys of Lincoln, William E. Keys Jr. (and wife Deb) of Decatur, Aaron and Travis Snyder and Rachel Volcek of Texas, and  Lori Ann Peisker of Redding, Calif.; and seven great-grandchildren.

Mrs. Keys was a member of the First United Church of Christ in Lincoln and the Lincoln Woman’s Club. She was a Ten Gallon Club blood donor and a graduate of Beason High School.

Memorials may be made to the Christian Nursing Home.


Vernon Apel

Vernon C. Apel, 80, of Atlanta died Saturday, Jan. 25, 2003, at 3:04 a.m. at Hopedale Nursing Home.

Visitation was Monday evening at Fricke-Calvert-Schrader Funeral Home in Lincoln.

His funeral was Tuesday morning at Zion Lutheran Church in Lincoln, with the Rev. Mark Carnahan officiating.

Burial is in New Union Cemetery, Lincoln.

Mr. Apel was a farmer.

He served in the 84th Division of the U.S. Army from 1944 to 1946.

He was born Oct. 8, 1922, in Atlanta to Albert and Anna Shrauf Apel. He married Catherine Ubbenga on Sept. 28, 1946, in Hartsburg.

Surviving are his wife, of Atlanta; one son, Dan Apel of Naperville; one daughter, Donna Bishop of Atlanta; three grandchildren, Hans and Kristin Bishop of Atlanta and Nicole Apel of Chicago; and one brother, Harold Apel of Lincoln.

He was a member of Zion Lutheran Church of Lincoln, American Legion Post 0341, Corn Growers Association, Soybean Association and Farm Bureau. He served on the board of education for Lawndale Grade School.

He was a recipient of the Purple Heart.

Memorials may be made to the the American Heart Association or Zion Lutheran Church in Lincoln.

Eleanor Hudson

Eleanor Ruth Hudson, 85, of Mason City died at 7:16 p.m. Monday, Jan. 27, 2003, at Mason City Area Nursing Home.

Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at Hurley Funeral Home, 603 E. Chestnut in Mason City.

Her funeral will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at the First Christian Church in Mason City, with the Rev. William Boyce officiating.

Burial will be in Elkhart Cemetery.

Mrs. Hudson was a homemaker.

She was born March 12, 1917, in Chicago to Alfred and Frances Phillips Curtis. She married John Hudson in Chicago on Aug. 29, 1936. He died Feb. 24, 1981.

Surviving are two sons, John P. (and Teddie) Hudson Jr. of Antioch and Curtis (and Dana) Hudson of Elkhart; one daughter, Sue (and Bill) Zimmerman of Mason City; nine grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

She was also preceded in death by one brother.

Ellie was a devoted member of the First Christian Church of Mason City and a gifted artist. She touched the lives of hundreds during the years by lifting their joys and sorrows up to the Lord through her card ministry, composted of her original sketches and carefully chosen Scripture verses.

Memorial contributions may be made to her church or to the Mason City Area Nursing Home.


Florene Richner

Florene M. Richner, 85, of Latham died Saturday, Jan. 25, 2003, at 6:30 a.m. at Vonderlieth Living Center in Mount Pulaski.

Fricke-Calvert-Schrader Funeral Home in Mount Pulaski is handling arrangements and will announce services later.

Mrs. Richner worked as a tool and die operator.

She was born July 2, 1917, in Logan County to James and Mary Centers. She married Wilhelm Richner in 1936, and he preceded her in death.

Surviving are one son, Robert (and Nancy) Richner of Latham; two grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; two brothers, Kie Carter and Gary Carter, both of Atlanta, Ga.; and one sister, also in Georgia.

Memorials may be made to Logan County Humane Society or the Logan County Animal Shelter.

Walter Martin

Walter R. Martin, 89, of Lincoln died Friday, Jan. 24, 2003, at 9:35 p.m. at Abraham Lincoln Memorial Hospital.

Mr. Martin was cremated, and services will be announced later.

Fricke-Calvert-Schrader Funeral Home of Lincoln is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Martin was a retired residential painter.

He was born Feb. 19, 1913, in Forest City. He married Frances A. Greenslate on April 26, 1942, in Lincoln. She survives.

Also surviving are one son, Rodney Martin of Lincoln; one daughter, Tawnya (and Leonard) Janet of Lincoln; two granddaughters, Mandy Janet of Baltimore and Amy Janet of Normal; one sister, Frances Penprase of Piasa; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Eugene Carlos Martin and Stella Lux Martin Groves, and by five brothers and three sisters.

He was a member of Cumberland Presbyterian Church and Lincoln Bible Church.

Memorials may be made to Lincoln Bible Church or St. Clara's Manor.
