Mitchell, Brady ask governor to declare Logan and DeWitt counties disaster areas

[JUNE 2, 2003]  SPRINGFIELD -- As people in Logan and DeWitt counties cope with damage left behind by a tornado, state Rep. Bill Mitchell, R-Forsyth, and state Sen. Bill Brady, R-Bloomington, asked Gov. Rod Blagojevich on Saturday to proclaim a disaster. A tornado swept through the region Friday night, destroying several businesses and homes, particularly on the south side of Clinton. Fortunately, no one was killed or seriously injured in the storm.

"The town of Clinton has suffered tremendous economic losses recently, and this tornado is another hit on the local economy," said Mitchell. "Senator Brady and I called the governor early today, asking for his help so that the residents and small businesses in the area can receive the assistance they need, and soon."

A proclamation from the governor would allow IEMA to access the State Disaster Relief Fund. The funding can be used to pay private vendors for services such as hauling debris, emergency lighting, water or landfill tipping fees. The funds can also be used to reimburse other state agencies, such as the Illinois Department of Transportation, Department of Corrections, Illinois State Police and the National Guard, for disaster relief efforts.

"It is our hope that Governor Blagojevich will act quickly on declaring these areas a disaster so that we can help those impacted by the storm get back on their feet as soon as possible," said Sen. Brady.
