[NOV. 26, 2003]
On Tuesday (Nov. 25) AFSCME
Local 2073 at Logan Correctional Center, jointly with Logan
Correctional Center management, collected and delivered over a
hundred pounds of nonperishable food items to the Logan County Food
Bank. This is an annual food drive at the prison and is funded
completely by donations from both union and management employees.

The union president, Bill Hess, said
the idea came about a few years ago when the members were discussing
how they might give back to the community. Money was thought about,
and then someone struck on the idea of collecting food. This is the
third year we have done this and it gets bigger every year, Hess
said.
The box will be set out again for
Christmas donations.
The Logan County Food Bank, located
near the corner of Broadway and Logan streets, is open two days a
week. Charlotte Ijams said that there were 12 new families that came
in this last week. There were 57 families that came in last Thursday
and 44 on Tuesday.

In addition to the prison's donation,
two other big food drives helped prepare for the holidays. Lincoln
Christian Church youth and Atlanta supported those drives.
Cash donations were used to buy turkey
rolls. Some baked goods have been coming from retailers in
Springfield, and the Lincoln Kroger has donated bakery and bread
goods as well. A lot of turnips and apples have also been donated.
To make
donations you can call Charlotte Ijams, (217) 648-2374, or Larry
Maffett, (217) 735-2691.
