SPRINGFIELD -- A farm broadcasting legend will
play a prominent role in Agriculture Day at the 2005 Illinois State
Fair.

Orion Samuelson, whose distinguished 45-year career as agricultural
services director of WGN radio in Chicago has made him a trusted
source of agricultural news and information, has agreed to serve as
emcee of the Governor's Sale of Champions, the auction of the fair's
blue-ribbon junior livestock. "Orion is more than a reporter to
farmers," Agriculture Director Chuck Hartke said. "He's a friend and
confidant, the person who accompanies them on those long days in the
cab of their tractor or combine. Through good years and bad, Orion
has been alongside them, providing timely news and sage advice. I'm
honored that he's accepted our invitation to participate in this
year's fair."
Samuelson was born on a dairy farm near La Crosse, Wis. In
addition to his work for WGN, he hosts two syndicated farm radio
programs heard collectively on 400 stations and is seen on "U.S.
Farm Report," a television show carried on more than 150 stations.
He was inducted into the Radio Hall of Fame in 2003 and is the only
broadcaster to win two Oscars in agriculture, one each for radio and
television.

"Orion has made significant contributions not only to
broadcasting, but also to the Illinois State Fair," said Amy
Bliefnick, fair manager. "He's a fair tradition just like the butter
cow and giant slide are. I'm sure Orion's many listeners will look
forward to renewing acquaintances with him on Agriculture Day."
Samuelson's association with the fair spans more than four
decades. In tribute to his service, the fair's Junior Livestock
Building bears his name.
The Illinois State Fair will run Aug. 12-21. Agriculture Day is
Aug. 16. The Sale of Champions will be in the Livestock Center and
begins with the auction of prize-winning commodities at 5:30 p.m.
The blue-ribbon livestock will be sold at 6 p.m.
