[DEC. 12, 2005]  NAPERVILLE -- The Lincoln Community High School speech team had a very strong showing at the Naperville Central Tournament of Champions. LCHS finished eighth of 35 teams competing.

For Lincoln, Janel Filbeck was the tournament champion in original oratory.

Also advancing to the final were Kelly Lohrenz, who placed third in dramatic interpretation; Amy Schumacher, who placed fourth in declamation; Lindsey Boerma, who placed fourth in humorous interpretation; and Ruth Ohmart, who placed seventh in prose.

"We were ecstatic," said Ed Jodlowski, a coach for the team. "We knew coming in that this tournament would be very tough for us, but these kids exceeded our expectations. While only five team members finaled, there were a number of kids close. This tournament was very difficult to get to the final round, so, with a few more breaks, we could have had more in the final."

The team competes next weekend at the Olympia Christmas Classic.
