[APRIL 26, 2006]  ELKHART -- Citizens For Education, a grass-roots organization of residents of the Mount Pulaski Community School District, met at 7 p.m. April 17 in the Elkhart Village Hall. Several area residents were in attendance, with the group growing in number and concern.

Items discussed included legal counsel, acquiring of pertinent information through the Freedom of Information Act, TIF guidelines, circulation of information pieces, timeliness of notification, and declining enrollment and the financial pressures facing the district in the future. Requests will be made for an itemized, line-by-line school district budget as well as past executive session minutes from the school board meetings.

It was decided to prepare an informational brochure to distribute, informing the public of the organization's existence, goals and plan of action. Financial contributions to assist the organization are being sought from district residents and can be mailed to Citizens For Education, P.O. Box 285, Elkhart, IL 62634. An account has been set up for these funds at Illini Bank in Elkhart.

In addition, information was shared as to the school district's tax contribution per township.

The next meeting of Citizens For Education will be at 7 p.m. Monday, May 1, at the Elkhart Village Hall. The meetings are every two weeks and are open to the residents of District 23. Come help us make a difference in the education of our district's children.
