Urbana Country Dancers support and promote contra dancing, a
traditional American dance form that has become popular in larger
cities and on college campuses across the country. It was popular in
New England during the 1700s. Though similar to square dancing, it
does not use squares; rather, there are two lines of dancers who
interact with other dancers during each set. Prior to each set, a
caller explains the expected movements and a walk-through is
conducted. Partners change with each set. You need not bring a
partner nor wear any costume. Newcomers are welcomed and will be
noticed by experienced dancers who will give them assistance as
needed.
Any comfortable clothing is appropriate. To protect the wooden
dance floor, please bring a pair of comfortable, soft-soled shoes or
sneakers, or use the brushes at the door to thoroughly clean your
shoes. Flats would be preferable to high heels.
A live acoustic string band will play for your enjoyment.
