[December 12, 2008]  BOSTON (AP) -- The Boston Red Sox unveiled their new "Hanging Sox" logo on Thursday and hope that free agent Mark Teixeira will be around next season to wear it.

In a marketing-driven event in the midst of the holiday season, the team introduced its new primary and secondary home and road jerseys, but the major emphasis of the evening was the Red Sox new team logo of "Hanging Sox," a pair of red socks that diminishes the use of the old circular logo and doesn't contain the words "Boston" or "Red Sox."

The "Hanging Sox" will be on most of the club's letterhead and signs.

As the winter meetings closed on Thursday in Las Vegas, the Red Sox were among the teams in the hunt for Teixeira, who reportedly has received offers of at least $150 million.

"Certainly the 'Hanging Sox' has an iconic value that transcends anything else in our assortment of brands and logos," Red Sox chief operating officer Mike Dee said of the new logo, originally unveiled on uniforms in 1931. "To have it be defined and standing alone is certainly the right thing to do."

With general manager Theo Epstein and most of the club's baseball operation staff wrapping things up in Vegas and heading back to Boston, manager Terry Francona, former players Jim Rice and Jerry Remy served as models along with two of slugger David Ortiz's children, helping create interest at a fashion show to introduce the new jerseys at "Game On," a bar connected to Fenway Park.

Their primary gray road uniforms will have blue letters, like ones worn in the early '80s, instead of the red letters on the jerseys the Red Sox wore when they captured World Series titles in 2004 and '07.

Reliever Manny Delcarmen wore the alternate road jersey, which will have blue tops, with red lettering. The "Hanging Sox" will be on the left sleeves of both.

In addition, the "Hanging Sox" will be on the front of a secondary cap, expected to be worn sparingly during the upcoming season.
