Tuesday
afternoon a truck parked in the alley behind Chicago Street Rentals was the
victim of an acetylene explosion. According to Lincoln Fire Department Chief Mark
Miller, a tank full of the gas used in welding and cutting metal developed a
leak. A fire was ignited when the owner of the truck was reaching for
something in the back of the truck bed and a spark flew. Firefighters knocked
down the worst of the flames, but according to Miller, they were allowing the tank to
burn in a controlled fire until all the gas has been spent. Firefighters
were assigned to watch the vehicle, and as late as 8 p.m. Tuesday, they were still
monitoring the slow burn of gas from the tank.
