LDN -- Top Stories

While preparing to graduate nearly 250 students on Saturday, Lincoln College
President Gerlach (left) hosted a special "Excellence in Leadership"
featuring its two honorary degree recipients - a 1960 graduate of Lincoln
College, businessman Alex D. "Sandy" MacKinnon (center), and one of the
world's most in-demand percussionists and educators, Richie Gajate Garcia
(right).

President Gerlach posed a series of questions crafted to help others to
glimpse into the lives of these two accomplished men, hear how they overcame
adversities to achieve what they did and what they value today. While two
career paths could not be much more different, both cited family influences
growing up and choosing their direction of education and career, moments of
motivation in getting on their path, educators influences, mentors, having a
vision and sharing it with others, being open to new experiences, and the
support of loving wives, who were present. And as they had received, both
look for opportunities to encourage others, particularly youth, to help them
believe in themselves.

The event was open to the public and well attended.
