LDN -- Top Stories

8:33 p.m. - FROM THE LOGAN COUNTY NIXLE

Verizon cell service in Lincoln is not working.  In the event of an emergency, a non-Verizon phone will be needed.

The company has given no estimated time when service will be restored.

On Tuesday evening the city of Lincoln Fire Department dedicated its new fire truck, apparatus 5103 and officially placed the truck in service. The ceremony included many age-old rituals that date back to the days when the Lincoln Fire Department relied on four-legged horsepower to get the apparatus to local emergencies.

As Jim Turley plays the bagpipe at the opening for the ceremony, Assistant Fire Cheif Ben Roland takes his place in the ladder basket with Fire Chief Bob Dunovsky standing before the new truck.

Prayer was offered by Pastor Ron Otto, the filling of the new truck with 'old water,' washing the wheels and wiping down the truck, then pushing it into the firehouse. This vehicle is actually too large for the fire station and is housed nearby. The truck was pushed by the firefighters as far as it could go to complete the symbolic ritual.

LDN will have additional coverage from the ceremony on Thursday.
