Today is the last day of October, Halloween if you will. This will be the night for spooks and ghosts and ghouls all out knocking on doors and calling out “trick or treat” in hopes of collecting sweet treasures by the mouthful.

This is also the last day of breast cancer awareness month, and the end of the Lincoln Daily News Paint the Paper Pink campaign. We end with the staff and stringers at LDN and one last message for those whose lives have become entangled with breast cancer.

Long ago a friend had breast cancer. Friends, family, co-workers all sent cards with well wishes. As the recipient opened the cards and read each one, she began to weep But not for the reason you might think. Through her sobs she said, “they all wish me the best, but not one of them said get well soon! Is that because they don’t think I will ever get well? Do they assume I’m going to die?”

We’ll not make that mistake again. Survival rates for breast cancer are higher than they have ever been and we know all our warriors have a greater chance of survival today than in all the history of breast cancer.

So we leave you with these three words. GET WELL SOON!
