Disappointed to see that school is to be torn down
3-16-00
To
the editor:
Hello.
I am now a resident of Bremerton, Wash., and this is the way I
stay in touch with Lincoln. When I saw the story about tearing
down Central School and the junior high I was taken back. My
grandfather, father and I all attended school there and I was
disappointed that rather than renovate it, it is going to be torn
down. I think it should be saved as a historic building just
because of the deep roots that it has in Lincoln. I am sure that
over half of Lincoln's families are in the same state of mind that
I am in about the history of both buildings. Thank you for your
time

LEEA concerned about school construction issues
3-10-00
To
the editor:
The
members of the Lincoln Elementary Education Association, the
professional organization for District #27 teachers, would like to
express a few concerns about the recent District #27 Board of
Education decision regarding the Central School/Lincoln Junior
High issue.
We
are greatly troubled by the loss of Ralph Gayle Field, which is
used not only by students in the school district, but also by many
residents from the community. This athletic facility will be
eliminated upon the construction of a new building; however, no
one has mentioned a plan to provide a similar accessible site.
Although well-suited to athletics, the field contains sinkholes,
and sits atop a major sewer line which will require extensive and
expensive replacement before construction begins. Knowledge of
these same features caused a previous District #27 Board to reject
as unworkable the idea of building a new school on this site in
the 1980s.
In
addition, it appears that no provision has been made in the
adopted proposal to address the future status of the current LJHS
building. The building occupies a valuable piece of district-owned
land in a central location. We feel that a viable plan for the use
of this property should be addressed as part of the board’s
proposal.
Finally,
the Board of Education received many suggestions and opinions from
parents, teachers, and administrators on the Central/LJHS matter.
The responses received from the parent survey were overwhelmingly
in favor of new construction to replace the current Central
building. The LJHS and Central teachers, favoring new buildings as
well, presented lists of safety and program concerns. At the last
school board meeting, assurances were made that these concerns
could be "95 percent addressed with renovation," but as
of yet, there have been no specifics as to which and how these
needs could be met. LEEA believes that the input from those who
work in the schools and are in daily contact with the students
deserves conscientious consideration.
We
ask:
For
the same money, which of these options would you choose for your
children and grandchildren?
#1.
A new middle school building,
a
new elementary school building,
and
Ralph Gale athletic field;
OR
#2.
A 90-year-old renovated building,
a
new building built over sinkholes,
and
no athletic field.
The
choice is obvious to us.
LEEA
believes our students deserve the best!
