Why
isn’t Lincoln growing?
8-23-01
To
the editor:
I
was born and raised in Lincoln. For a period of time, I
moved away from the Lincoln area. I decided to move back
because it is a great place to live, work and raise a
family. This city has a great location, unique history and
wonderful people. However, for the life of me, I can’t
figure out why it isn’t growing. Why are we not attracting
new populations or new businesses? Why do young people want
to move away from Lincoln as soon as they can?
Why
is it that we discourage someone from improving the value and
quality of property? Why is it that we discourage those who
want to invest in our community? Why is it that we
discourage additional services and conveniences? Then why is
it that we wonder why our city isn’t growing???
To
me the answer is pretty obvious. In the last year, we have
seen at least three economic development projects come before the
approval of our local government. The first was the auto
parts store that would have improved an eyesore property along
Lincoln’s primary thoroughfare. That was denied because a
few people complained about increased traffic.
The
second development was Rod White’s the residential development
on Lincoln’s northeast side. That project was lost at one
point because our local government did not wish to participate in
the investment into the community. Fortunately, Mr. White
did not give up and proceeded to gain approval.
The
third development is the proposed Casey’s store on Fifth
Street. Again, here is an opportunity for someone to make an
investment from which our community will reap the rewards for many
years to come. What do we do, we tell them we’d rather
make a parking lot!!! And we wonder why our city isn’t
growing?
Do
we really want to preserve that corridor of Fifth Street??
The best way to get someone to visit a historic site is to improve
the area surrounding it.
Has
anyone asked Casey’s to see if they would be willing to work
some extra parking into their plans?
Someone
please explain this to me, because I do not understand why we
continually reject investment in our community. Our
community isn’t growing because our city officials won’t let
it.

History
of balloon flying corrected
8-22-01
To
the editor:
"The
balloonists come from all over Illinois and from many other states
as well, mostly western states, Turner says. He remembers a number
of balloons from New Mexico, where the popular sport started, as
well as from Colorado, Missouri, Iowa and a few from
Florida." [Excerpt from "New
balloon fest chairman is an old hand"]
Ballooning
was started in 1783 in France, and the modern balloon system was
developed by Raven Industries in the early 1960s. The first
"modern" flight in a hot-air balloon was in South
Dakota. Ed Yost was the pilot of that flight that lasted about 20
minutes.
Just
a li’l correction for you. :-)

Wake-up
call for new business opportunity
8-20-01
To
the editor:
I
hope that my fellow commissioners were asleep at the switch last
Thursday evening and not openly conspiring against a new business
that wants to come to Lincoln.
This
is the second business in a row to be denied a zoning change by
the planning commission. What are we saying to businesses that
want to locate here? "I’m sorry, we are going to become a
tourist mecca and have no need for your property or sales tax
revenues." "I’m sorry, you are a corporate entity,
and I don’t want you competing with my buddies."
Businesses compete all the time. What does the average consumer
gain from competition? Better service! Better products!
As
for a parking lot and visitors center on that lot for the
Postville Courthouse, ask Joe on the street about that one and see
if he doesn’t giggle.
I
urge everyone to call their council member and tell them to
reverse the vote by the planning commission. And then call
another member of the council just to make sure!! Lincoln can’t
afford to let these opportunities slip by.
Sincerely,
Mike
Miller
Member
of the planning commission
.
