Supports
statue
5-23-01
To
the editor:
I
am Dr. S.M. Davis’ brother Welton Davis, doing missionary work
for many years in Bolivia, South America.
Before
returning here in April to Bolivia, I was in Lincoln and
saw his presentation on the Lincoln statue. Not just because
he is my brother, but I think this is a tremendous idea and plan
that would put Lincoln "on the map" so to speak. I
hope it comes to the developmental stage soon in honor of a great
man and president—Lincoln. Most of the world looks up to
him.
I
would love to be there for the dedication.
Yours,
Welton

Davis explains
his reasons
for proposed Abraham Lincoln statue
5-21-01
To
the editor:
I’m
amazed and appreciative for the many positive comments in relation
to my proposal for a 305-foot-tall statue of Abraham Lincoln.
I
have presented the slide presentation to several civic groups and
also to a group of students at the Lincoln Junior High School. The
junior high students voted to build the statue and also did a
study on how to do it and where it should be located. In a
question-and-answer session with the junior high students, many
wise questions were asked. One such question was, "Why do you
want to build such a statue?"
My
answer went something like this: Every year more books are written
about two men than any other men in history. Those men are Jesus
Christ and Abraham Lincoln.
Of
course many of us believe that Jesus was both God and man.
Nonetheless, Lincoln was truly a great man and many would argue
that he was our country’s greatest president.
I
would love to see the statue built to honor this truly great man.
In fact, I would suggest that any written charter for the statue
have included in it that no display of any kind could ever be used
that did not show respect to the life, character and memory of
Abraham Lincoln.
A
second reason to build the statue is to encourage the development
of character in our youth. One has only to read the newspaper to
see that we are experiencing something of a character crisis among
America’s youth.
If
the statue is built, tens of thousands of youth would come to
visit is. What a potentially powerful impact a Character Art
Gallery could have with 40 to 50 Lloyd Ostendorf-style paintings
portraying event from the life of Abraham Lincoln. These events
could demonstrate honesty, humility, sincerity, boldness, justice,
compassion, responsibility, diligence, forgiveness, initiative,
etc. A two- or three-paragraph description of each picture along
with a quote by Mr. Lincoln himself extolling the virtue could
have a great impact on young people. Perhaps some emphasis on
character could also be developed in relation to the Watermelon
Playground. Would it not be phenomenal if, as our population
increased, our crime rate decreased because of an emphasis on
character?
Would
the statue promote tourism? I would hope so. Would it benefit our
economy? I think so. But I really suspect that those things would
not be as powerful and beneficial in the long range as the other
things.
