Russell Dean Bruce
Russell Dean "R.D."
Bruce, 89, a Christian Village resident since 1995, died at 9:55
a.m. Monday, Nov. 11, 2002, at the Christian Nursing Home in
Lincoln.
Visitation will be
from 4 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at Fricke-Calvert-Schrader Funeral Home
in Lincoln. A Masonic service will be at 7 p.m.
His funeral will be
at 10 a.m. Thursday at Fricke-Calvert-Schrader, with Ryan Edgecombe
officiating.
Burial will be in
Memorial Park, Clinton.
Mr. Bruce was a
farmer for 63 years in the Broadwell, Hallsville, Beason and Clinton
areas. He rented his first farm when he was 13 and retired from
farming in 1990. He was also a self-employed electrician during many
years of his farming career.
He was born May 2,
1913, in Lodiburg, Ky., to E.T. and Lila Shobe Bruce. He married
Vivian Kious on Jan. 25, 1941, at her home in DeWitt County. She
died Nov. 11, 2001.
Surviving are two
sons, Kirby (and Vickie) Bruce of Lincoln and Norman (and Jane)
Bruce of Mason City; two daughters, Beverly (and Mike) Donnan of
Ashland and Sharon (and Fred) Thomsen of Wood Dale; 12 grandchildren;
16 great-grandchildren; one sister, Hilma McHaney of Lincoln; and
one brother, Earl "Ed" Bruce of Normal.
He was also preceded
in death by two sisters, Wilma McCubbin and Edna Bratcher.
He was a member of
the Clinton Methodist Church and was active in the Methodist
churches in the communities where he resided. He was also a member
of the Masonic Lodge, Order of Eastern Star and Abraham Lincoln
Shrine and held various offices in each.
He was active in many
school functions in the Beason area, where all of his children
attended grade school and high school.
He loved and enjoyed
his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
He was respected by
all who knew him and loved by all those close to him. He will be
dearly missed.
Memorials toward the purchase of a
communion table may be made to the chapel equipment fund at the
Christian Village.

Hazel Arnold
Hazel M. Arnold, 84,
died at 7:36 a.m. Sunday, Nov. 10, 2002, at Mason City Area Nursing
Home.
Her funeral will be
at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Hurley Funeral Home, 603 E. Chestnut in
Mason City. The Rev. Randall Paine will officiate. Visitation will
be one hour before the service.
Burial will be in
Mason City Cemetery.
Mrs. Arnold was a
homemaker for her family.
She was born Feb. 19,
1918, in Green Valley to Leslie and Bertha Worstall Boyer. She
married Howard Arnold on July 25, 1936, in Mason City. He survives.
Other survivors are
three sons, William (and Janice) Arnold of Mason City, Robert (and
Connie) Arnold of Mason City and Delbert (and Pat) Arnold of White
Plains, Md.; three daughters, Bonnie (and Don) Onken of Easton,
Connie (and Bob) Kemp of Mason City and Cheryl (and Bert) Hill of
Lincoln; 21 grandchildren; 39 great-grandchildren; and two sisters,
Viola Wagner of Mason City and Florence Ruth of Green Valley.
She was preceded in
death by one daughter, Sharon Calhoun, and one great-grandchild.
She was a member of
the United Presbyterian Church of Mason City.

Elwin Ballinger
Elwin Ballinger, 82,
of Atlanta, formerly of Kansas, Ill., died at 2:10 a.m. Monday, Nov.
11, 2002, at his home.
Visitation will be
from 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Quiram Funeral Home, Atlanta.
His funeral will be
at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the Atlanta Christian Church, with David
Harmon officiating. A graveside committal service will be at 3 p.m.
Thursday at St. Paul’s Cemetery, rural Nokomis, where military rites
will be conducted by Waples-Bauer American Legion Post 94 of
Nokomis.
Mr. Ballinger was a
teacher and coach at several schools in Illinois. He was later
employed at Eastern Illinois University, Charleston, until he
retired in 1985.
During World War II
he served with the Army Air Corps in the Philippine Islands and
various assignments in the South Pacific.
He was born Feb. 1,
1920, at Toledo to Tony Otto and Laura F. Lyster Ballinger. He
married Marjorie L. Brackenhoff in Lincoln on Dec. 5, 1943. She died
Nov. 28, 1999. He married Anna Jean Ballinger on June 10, 2001, at
Hall, Ind., and she survives.
Also surviving are
one son, Roy (and Trudy) Ballinger of Rochester; one daughter, Joyce
M. Johnson of Kansas, Ill.; six grandchildren, Michael Johnson,
Jason Johnson, Jacqueline Ballinger Elfgren, Mark Allen Ballinger,
Andra Russell and Jennifer Hubbell; five great-grandchildren; six
stepchildren, Lloyd Mitchell Ballinger of Bowie, Md., Kathleen (and
David) McFadden of Poplar Bluff, Mo., David (and Betty) Ballinger of
Stanford, Nancy (and Wesley) Melton of LeRoy, Bryan (and Traci)
Ballinger of Atlanta and Russell (and Jeana) Ballinger of Atlanta;
several stepgrandchildren and step-great-grandchildren; one sister,
Doris Lefley of Chicago; one brother, Charles Ballinger of Atlanta;
and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was also preceded
in death by one brother and one sister.
He was a 1938
graduate of Lincoln High School and attended Lincoln College and
Illinois State Normal University.
In retirement, he
became a full-time camper and was a member of the Thousand Trails
Camping Organization.
He was also a member
of the Kansas, Ill., American Legion, Charleston VFW and Faith
Lutheran Church in Lincoln.

June Connolley
June E. Connolley, 87, formerly of
Mount Pulaski, died Oct. 30, 2002, at Valley Health Care
Convalescent Home, San Bernardino, Calif.
A graveside service will be at 11 a.m.
Friday at Mount Pulaski Cemetery. Bill Shanle will officiate.
There is no visitation.
Fricke-Calvert-Schrader Funeral Home of
Mount Pulaski is handling local arrangements.
Mrs. Connolley was a homemaker.
She was born Feb. 10, 1915, in
Warrensburg to Walter Raymond and Eunice Vila Binkley Hoaglin. She
married John W. Connolley in Missouri on July 27, 1940. He died July
14, 1993.
Surviving are one daughter, Sharon Hall
of San Bernardino, Calif.; one son, Michael Connolley of Olalla,
Wash.; four grandchildren; one sister, Dorothy Fleetwood of Decatur;
and one brother, Robert Hoaglin of Latham.
She was also
preceded in death by one sister.
