SPECIAL EVENTS AND ANNOUNCEMENTS

Holiday Happenings workshop scheduled

November and December are hectic months for everyone. The time slips by with many tasks to complete. Holiday shopping, holiday plant care and holiday cooking are all on our minds.

To help keep the holiday frenzy at a minimum, the University of Illinois Extension, Logan County Unit, is offering a workshop, "Holiday Happenings," from 1 to 3:30 p.m. on Nov. 14 at the Postville Road office in Lincoln.

David Robson, horticulture educator, will speak on holiday plant care and Christmas tree safety and care. Highlights will include poinsettia, Christmas cactus, amaryllis and fresh arrangement and greenery care, as well as answering questions on other indoor plants.

"Healthy Holidays" will be the topic of the foods and nutrition presentation given by Jananne Finck, nutrition and wellness educator. Finck will give tips on how to cut the sugar, fat and calories from holiday favorites and will demonstrate some of her favorite recipes. She will also answer questions on how to keep holiday foods safe and healthy.

Ellen Burton, consumer and family economic educator, will provide participants with unique and practical gift ideas for those who have almost everything. All participants will receive a resource list of gift costs and ideas. The program will also feature appliances that can make everyday tasks easier and safer for everyone. Tips for shopping for electrical appliances will be included. Great ideas will be provided for the late-season shoppers. Additionally, program participants will have the opportunity to participate in a gift comparison activity.

After the presentations, participants will sample foods prepared, and door prizes will be awarded to lucky registrants.

The cost for the program is $5 per person. Preregistration is required. To preregister, and also if you need a reasonable accommodation to participate in this program, call the Logan County Extension office at (217) 732-8289 by Nov. 8.

Lincoln Rotary Club project

During National Education Week, the week of Nov. 18-22, Lincoln Rotary Club members will be visiting kindergarten classes in the area. During these visits they will read to the children from the book "Look! I Can Read!" Susan Hood is the author, and illustrations are by Amy Wummer. Each child will receive a copy of the book to keep.

The story is appropriate for beginning readers. It uses simple stories composed of very few words to a page, along with colorful pictures which help the child figure out the words used. Children will find that the story expands their interest and excites their imagination, providing them with encouragement to expand their efforts in beginning reading.

The schools Rotarians will be visiting are Adams, Central, Jefferson, Northwest, Washington-Monroe, Carroll Catholic, Chester-East Lincoln, West Lincoln-Broadwell, Zion Lutheran and Emden Grade School. Approximately 250 books will be distributed to children.

Rotarians involved in this project are Joe Ryan, Brittney Redding, Rich Montcalm, Bob Wilson, Rick Hamm, Barb O’Donohue, Bonnie Young, Joe Runyon, Dayle Eldredge, Marty Ahrends, Chris Graue, Deb Ackerman, Darren Humphres, Wally Reifsteck, Linda Marini, Lynn Laughlin, Ed Stanfield, Don Jordan, Bob Jeckel, Mary Bruns, Harold Jeckel, Linda Schneider, Art Rohrer, Doug DeMay, Bob Kidd and Keith Leesman.

Funds for this project are derived from Rotary sales of oranges and grapefruit.

Family and Friends in the Armed Forces

It is a time like no other. Since Sept. 11 we are a changed nation. Individually, our daily sensitivity toward whom and what we have in our lives has been heightened. We are more conscious and appreciative, first about those we love and see every day. Next, we have a newfound appreciation for those who risk their lives every day as rescue workers and protectors of life and property in our communities. We also now think more about our military men and women who are committed to serve and protect our country. Many are away engaged in battle, some are in waiting to go, all are ready to lay their lives on the line in defense of our freedom.

Friends and relatives serving in the armed forces are listed here so we might all hold them in our thoughts, prayers and well wishes. If you know of other friends and relatives serving (they need not be from Logan County), please send the information to ldneditor@lincolndailynews.com. Along with the name, you are invited to include the branch of service, current location of service, postal address, e-mail address and relationship to the person providing the information (optional).
