Lincoln
retailers receive kudos
[SEPT.
25, 2002]
On Sept. 12 the Lincoln
Police Department conducted a series of alcohol compliance checks on
local alcohol retailers. Using an 18-year-old male, the Lincoln
Police Department had the male attempt to purchase alcohol from 13
retail stores. These compliance checks are performed to determine if
local retailers are complying with state and local minimum-age
alcohol sale laws.
|
The city is pleased to announce that by
education and training, local retailers refused to sell alcohol to
the minor during the compliance check, giving Lincoln a 100 percent
compliance rate.
The results from that compliance check
are listed below:
• Apollo Mart — did not
sell
• Quick Way Foods — did
not sell
• Kickapoo Mini Mart — did
not sell
• Lincoln IGA — did not
sell
• Thornton’s — did not
sell
• Qik-N-EZ — did not sell
• Kroger — did not sell
• CVS — did not sell
• Clark Refining — did not
sell
• Ayerco — did not sell
• Eagle Market — did not
sell
• Fifth Street Food Mart —
did not sell
The city and
the Lincoln Police Department thank the above retailers for their
efforts in reducing the availability of the use of alcohol by
minors. Retailers were given a letter awarding them for their
employee training and overall concern about underage use of alcohol.

Stabbing
under investigation
Accused
assailant pleads not guilty
[SEPT.
17, 2002]
Lincoln Police say the
stabbing of a 22-year-old Lincoln man is still under investigation.
According to Lincoln Police Detective John Bunner, who is handling
the case, the victim’s name and specifically what happened are not
being released at this time. He said he may be conducting interviews
with a few people yet. The details that surround the circumstances
of the incident are being kept confidential to protect the integrity
of the investigation.
|
At 12:48 a.m. Thursday police were
called out to the 600 block of South Hamilton Street. When officers
arrived they found the victim outside at the scene. The victim was
first taken to Abraham Lincoln Memorial Hospital and then
transferred to Saint John’s Hospital in Springfield. Detective
Bunner said the victim sustained multiple stab wounds.
Two arrests have been made. The first
suspect, Marty Montcalm, 20, of Lincoln was arrested by Lincoln
Police just after the incident and is being held in lieu of bond at
the Logan County Safety Complex. He went before Judge David Coogan
at 9 a.m. today, Tuesday.
Montcalm is being charged with
attempted first-degree murder, a Class X felony, and aggravated
battery, a Class III felony. Montcalm’s court-appointed lawyer
stated that Montcalm wished to waive his right to a preliminary
hearing and was entering a plea of not guilty. Judge Coogan accepted
the plea and stated that Montcalm is on the November jury calendar.

article] |
Montcalm also has a court appearance
later in the day on charges stemming from another incident. He goes
before Judge Donald Behle for a July 13 charge of illegal
consumption of alcohol.
A second arrest, of another
20-year-old, was made late last week. Joshua L. Farnam, formerly of
Lawndale, faces charges of attempted first-degree murder.
Farnam fled the area after the
incident. He was believed to be heading for Florida, where he has
relatives. Authorities picked him up in Dothan, Ala. He is awaiting
transportation arrangements back to Logan County, said Logan County
Sheriff’s Chief Deputy Jon Garlits. It may take one to two weeks for
his arrival.
Both of the accused have a long
criminal history with the Police Department, said Detective Bunner.
On Saturday
morning Lincoln Police recovered from Kickapoo Creek the knife that
was used in the incident.
