Good Shepherd Lutheran celebrating its fifth anniversary

[SEPT. 28, 2002]  On Sept. 29, Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, a member of the Association of Free Lutheran Congregations, will celebrate its fifth year as a congregation. Pastor Robert Lee, president of AFLC, will be guest speaker at the 10 a.m. service. Lavon Bohling of Free Lutheran Association Pilot Service, or FLAPS, will assist. Pastor Lee, Mrs. Lee, Lavon Bohling and Mrs. Bohling will fly in at the local airport.

A potluck dinner in the fellowship hall of the church will follow the worship service. Everyone is invited to attend both.

History

After several meetings of interested families in July and August 1997, it was decided to meet with Pastor Lee, president of the Association of Free Lutheran Congregations, in Minneapolis. This meeting was on the Tuesday following Labor Day 1997. Also in attendance were Roger David and his wife, Rose, of Springfield, whom Pastor Lee introduced.

After several more meetings it was decided to have a service, with Roger David as lay minister, to see if enough families were interested in forming a new congregation. And so that was the beginning.

The first service was Sept. 28, 1997, in an attached two-car garage, with 65 present and members from several AFLC churches in attendance. After three services, the congregation outgrew the garage and rented the Woman’s Club building, at 230 N. McLean St., for Sunday school and Sunday morning worship services. Services were held at that location until the new church home was completed.

On Aug. 17, 1998, the congregation purchased a parcel of land at 1100 N. State St. from the Buchholz family. On Sept. 27, 1998, at 2 p.m. the congregation broke ground at its present location, 1140 N. State St., for the new building. Excavation and foundation work began the following week.

Ten months later, July 25, 1999, the first service was held in the completed new church home, built mostly with volunteer labor. Dedication of the new church was on Aug. 1, 1999, with Pastor Lee as guest speaker.

This past summer the blacktop project was completed, with the parking area covered and striped.

And so on Sept. 29, Good Shepherd Lutheran will celebrate its fifth anniversary.

Please join us as we begin the sixth year as a congregation which  believes the Bible to be the true word of God, inerrant and infallible.

Three lectures by David Noebel address worldviews challenging today’s Christian

[SEPT. 21, 2002]  David A. Noebel, president of Summit Ministries in Manitou Springs, Colo., will present the 2002 Strauss Lectures at Lincoln Christian College and Seminary on Oct 1 and 2. Using as his theme the title of his best-selling book, "Understanding the Times," Mr. Noebel will present three lectures on the challenges posed by non-Christian worldviews in our Western culture and how only the biblical understanding of life can meet the tests of life.

Noebel is an author, editor, public speaker and ordained minister. In addition to "Understanding the Times," Noebel has co-written, with Tim LaHaye, the recent New York Times best seller, "Mind Siege," published in 2001. He is a recognized expert on worldview analysis and the decline of morality and spirituality in Western civilization. He has been a college professor, college president and candidate for U.S. Congress.

Summit Ministries was founded in 1962 to "train the next generation of Christian leaders to understand the times in which they live and know what they ought to do" (I Chronicles 12:32).

Following is the schedule for the lectures:

Tuesday, Oct. 1

9:30 a.m. — "The Real Clash of Worldviews Within Western Civilization," Hargrove Chapel Auditorium

5:30 p.m. — Banquet with brief remarks from Dr. James Strauss, Taylor Hall, $10

7 p.m. — "Examining the Essence and Influence of the Secular Humanist Worldview," Restoration Hall, Room R-49

Wednesday, Oct. 2

9:30 a.m. — "Defending the Biblical Christian Worldview"

Park Meadows hosts Red,
White and Blue Sunday

[SEPT. 6, 2002]  On Sept. 29 at 10:30 a.m., Park Meadows Baptist Church is hosting their third annual Red, White and Blue Sunday. This is a special day which allows the church to:

•  Honor and thank fire department, emergency services and law enforcement personnel in the area.

•  Motivate and challenge people to pray for, support, and appreciate those men and women who dedicate their lives each day to protect and serve us.

•  To hear the leaders of fire department, emergency services and law enforcement personnel publicly honor someone from their departments.

•  Teach the youth that these men and women are to be respected and obeyed.

•  Provide an opportunity for those who work in key areas to hear a message of encouragement from a nationally known and respected chaplain.

The special speaker will be Mark Rizzo. He is an FBI trainer; seminar speaker on gangs, organized crime, criminal justice and behavioral science; and executive director of FREEdom Flyer Ministries, which has more than 500 staff members serving law enforcement in 42 states and four countries.

A potluck meal after the morning service will be provided for all guests and their families and shared by members of the church.
