Good Shepherd Lutheran celebrating its fifth anniversary [SEPT. 28, 2002] On Sept. 29, Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, a member of the Association of Free Lutheran Congregations, will celebrate its fifth year as a congregation. Pastor Robert Lee, president of AFLC, will be guest speaker at the 10 a.m. service. Lavon Bohling of Free Lutheran Association Pilot Service, or FLAPS, will assist. Pastor Lee, Mrs. Lee, Lavon Bohling and Mrs. Bohling will fly in at the local airport. A potluck dinner in the fellowship hall of the church will follow the worship service. Everyone is invited to attend both. History After several meetings of interested families in July and August 1997, it was decided to meet with Pastor Lee, president of the Association of Free Lutheran Congregations, in Minneapolis. This meeting was on the Tuesday following Labor Day 1997. Also in attendance were Roger David and his wife, Rose, of Springfield, whom Pastor Lee introduced. After several more meetings it was decided to have a service, with Roger David as lay minister, to see if enough families were interested in forming a new congregation. And so that was the beginning. The first service was Sept. 28, 1997, in an attached two-car garage, with 65 present and members from several AFLC churches in attendance. After three services, the congregation outgrew the garage and rented the Woman’s Club building, at 230 N. McLean St., for Sunday school and Sunday morning worship services. Services were held at that location until the new church home was completed. On Aug. 17, 1998, the congregation purchased a parcel of land at 1100 N. State St. from the Buchholz family. On Sept. 27, 1998, at 2 p.m. the congregation broke ground at its present location, 1140 N. State St., for the new building. Excavation and foundation work began the following week. Ten months later, July 25, 1999, the first service was held in the completed new church home, built mostly with volunteer labor. Dedication of the new church was on Aug. 1, 1999, with Pastor Lee as guest speaker. This past summer the blacktop project was completed, with the parking area covered and striped. And so on Sept. 29, Good Shepherd Lutheran will celebrate its fifth anniversary. Please join us as we begin the sixth year as a congregation which believes the Bible to be the true word of God, inerrant and infallible.
