March Madness Mutterings
By Jeff Mayfield
[MARCH
31, 2003]
My
brackets are totally busted! How are yours? I didn't have one team
in the Final Four … could think I don't predict for a living, huh?
We'd starve this spring!
|
How 'bout those Marquette Golden
Eagles? Has to be the team of choice in the French Quarter! And they
would have even been a lot better had they finally chosen Gregg
Alexander two years ago. They'd have Travis on the point, Wade doing
whatever he wants, Novak on one wing and Alexander pounding them
down on the other… a national championship banner just waiting to be
hung! Oh well, we'll root for them anyway…
Can you say enough about the Hartsburg-Emden
and Mount Pulaski volleyball teams? If I ever have any daughters, I
guess I better get them in volleyball camps during pre-school! I had
always thought that maybe tennis or golf was the route. All these
GREAT volleyball programs have made me rethink that position!
Congratulations to Hartem for winning the 7A and the 8A state
championships, and we hope to see you on "FANdamonium" soon!
Speaking of "FANdamonium"… Join my
co-host Greg Taylor tonight as his guests will be the voice of the
Railers, Jeff Benjamin, and we think Tom Larry. Also, expect a few
surprises. You can catch the show every Monday at 6 p.m. right here
on the LDN or at FIX 96.3 FM or on Lincoln cable Channel 5!
I think that Texas was a lot better
than people thought they were.
Marquette was kind of a sandbaggin'
team. When we saw them in Indy, we thought Illinois was a lot
better.
At any rate, it's time to play golf.
Got your sticks out yet? Any early reports on what courses are
looking good, really good deals? Send 'em in and we'll post them all
for the world to see.
IF this column seems a little subdued
right now, it's just hard to get real up for sports with a war going
on. My heart not only goes out to the soldiers, but it goes out to
innocent families and civilians all over the world. I hope that
leaders one day realize that their actions DO have repercussions on
everybody…

Today is baseball's Opening Day…
following last night's Opening Night. We like Atlanta, Houston or
the Cubs and San Francisco. In the junior circuit we'll go with the
White Sox, the Yankees and the swingin' A's!
Don't know if the Cardinals have enough
pitching or can stay healthy enough to reach the playoffs again.
Would like to see the St. Louis Blues
win a Stanley Cup. What are their realistic chances?
Did you see the way Davis Love III
played this weekend? Fred Couples said it was the best he had ever
seen Love play!
Does anyone know the secret to hitting
long, straight long-iron shots?
I haven't seen so many balls heading
for the water since Medinah! Or, since the last time I teed them up!
Can anyone beat Michelle Kwan?
What ever happened to Jenny Chusiaporn?
Didn't get to see it, but heard the
North-South game out at the Laughlin Center had plenty of scoring!
Anybody know any good, inside rumors
about the Illinois State coaching jobs? I'd jump ship for six
figures and a country club membership, and I think I could promise
them at least 10 wins! If you know Perk personally, throw the name
into the hat…
On that
hilarious note, we'll close. Have a GREAT week, everybody!
[Jeff
Mayfield]
