Redbirds score season high in loss to No.10
Creighton
[JAN. 21, 2003]
OMAHA,
Neb. -- Illinois State scored a season-high 82 points at Creighton,
which also was the most points scored on the Bluejays all year, but
the nationally-ranked Missouri Valley Conference leader dropped 95
of its own on the Redbirds as ISU fell to No.10 Creighton 95-82 in
Valley action Sunday in Omaha.
|
Trey Guidry led the Redbirds with 21
points. He shot eight-of-10 from the field and was five-of-seven
from the 3-point mark. Baboucarr Bojang added a season-high 18
points for Illinois State, while Chris Burras came off the bench for
the 'Birds to score a career-high nine points while pulling down
four boards.
Creighton was led by Larry House, who
notched 23 points. Kyle Korver added 17 for the Bluejays, while Joe
Dabbert had 11 and Mike Grimes had 10.
With 15:41 to go in the first half,
Illinois State pulled to within two off a trey by Greene. But
Creighton answered with nine straight points and a 12-point lead,
22-10. The Redbirds fought back again, however, and were down by
only four after
Gregg Alexander
hit a trey of his own, but Creighton couldn't be stopped
offensively. Consecutive jumpers by Grimes and Michael Lindeman
showcased the Bluejays as they took a 53-40 halftime lead.

Creighton led by as many as 23 with
10:38 to go in the second half before Burras hit a couple of free
throws to pull ISU to within 18, at 75-57 with 10 minutes to play. A
16-point deficit with 3:20 remaining was closer for Illinois State,
which ended the game down by only 13, 95-82.
The Redbirds shot 53.6 percent in the
game but committed 20 turnovers. Creighton took advantages of
Illinois State's mistakes, scoring 31 points off turnovers, while
ISU scored only 13 off the Bluejays.
ISU returns
to action on Saturday, Jan. 25, against the Purple Aces of
Evansville. It is a 7:05 p.m. tipoff in Evansville, Ind.

Railers keep rollin'
By Jeff Mayfield
[JAN. 20, 2003]
If you
thought we were kiddin' the last couple of weeks when it comes to
how good the Lincoln Railers are playing, then you obviously didn't
see the Lincoln-Pekin game on Saturday. Lincoln was up 30-4 at half
and 46-9 after three quarters. Now that's dominance! Everyone seems
to be playing well for Lincoln right now… you just hope that they
don't peak too early. That's usually not a problem for
Alexander-coached teams. This week proves to be another kind of test
entirely, as Lincoln has a five- or six-game week!
|
SUPER
matchup
Well, it's going to be the Oakland
Raiders against that wild man, Jon Gruden's, Tampa Bay Buccaneers!
But, who will win? Since Tampa went into a hostile environment and
did the unthinkable, they must have the edge in San Diego. The
Raiders are old and could really have used the old format of two
weeks off before the Big game. Both games seemed to be
well-officiated.
Random
thoughts
Local and area colleges hoped to be
better than their current records at this point, but there's still
time to ready for the postseason.
Making my annual trip to watch our
local junior high teams play... I saw Carroll Catholic's teams
earlier, and they really performed well. LJHS had been up and down a
little, but we saw both of their teams this week in two pretty
impressive wins.
Is it just me or are any other Cardinal
fans worried about how much Houston and Chicago have improved over
the winter?
The Birds are pinning their hopes on
everyone coming back healthy. When you've been in the playoffs so
many times, do you really worry if they miss a year? That whole
concept really concerns us, the way sports are run as a business
rather than trying to win championships every year!

Equal opportunity? There's been a lot
of talk about that when it comes to hirings in the world of sports.
We don't know about you, but I'd hire the person who gives us the
best chance to win… period! All the hype, discussions, crossfires,
etc. are not going to change the bottom line for pro franchises and
many college programs… winning!
