Prison alternatives could free monies
for quality-of-life budgets

[JULY 10, 2003]  This year our nation will spend about $24 billion to lock up 1.2 million nonviolent offenders. This excessive spending can be reduced through viable, cost-effective alternatives to imprisonment.

Cost-cutting alternatives for nonviolent offenders include community-based corrections facilities, halfway houses, intensive probation, day reporting and electronic monitoring. Implementing these alternatives would prevent budget cuts affecting essential health care and educational programs in Illinois.

Developing these incarceration alternatives will provide healthier options for nonviolent offenders and free up state funds that will directly benefit the community.
