CHICAGO -- The 3M Economic
Educator Excellence Award for 2003, sponsored by 3M and the Illinois
Council on Economic Education, has been presented to Ms. Ruth Sloot
from Lincoln Community High School in Lincoln. Ms. Sloot received
the award for the |
Secondary Division based on her
sustained history of commitment and contribution to economic
education.
The 3M Economic Educator Excellence
Award honors teachers who provide leadership for economics in
their school, show evidence of professional development in
economic education and have affected student achievement or growth
in economic understanding.
Ms. Sloot is a veteran economics
educator who has been instrumental in developing economic
curriculum aligned to the Illinois Learning standards and
integrating that curriculum within Lincoln Community High School’s
civics and economics courses. She has incorporated The Stock
Market Game in her classes each spring semester for the past 10
years, providing an exciting learning experience for her students.

"Her commitment to engaging students
in economic and financial lessons and to educating students,
colleagues and contemporaries alike is truly exemplary,” said
Joanne Dempsey, president of ICEE.
The award was presented to Ms. Sloot
at the ICEE annual Economic Education Day awards luncheon hosted
by the Union League Club of Chicago. She received a cash award as
well as a plaque to commemorate her accomplishment.
The Illinois Council on Economic
Education is a unit within the division of NIU Outreach at
Northern Illinois University. Through eight Centers for Economic
Education at universities throughout the state. ICEE provides
professional development programs for K-12 teachers, curriculum
consulting and student programs to enhance economic understanding.
