Alena Newell

Alena Maxine Newell, 91, of Mason City, died Friday (Sept. 19, 2003) at 12:05 p.m. at Mason City Area Nursing Home.

Her funeral will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Hurley Funeral Home in Mason City, with the Rev. Curt McCallister officiating. Visitation will be one hour before the service.

Burial will be in Mason City Cemetery.

Mrs. Newell was a homemaker and a minister's wife.

She was born July 9, 1912, at Littleton to Clyde and Pearl Wells Runkle. She married the Rev. Lyle Newell on July 5, 1931. He died Oct. 28, 1988.

Survivors are two sons, Roger (and Vicky) Newell of Quincy and Rob (and Vicki) Newell of Naples, Fla.; one daughter, Rose (and Larry) Deener of Mason City; seven grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; one brother, Gene (and Ruth) Runkle of Littleton; and one sister, Doris Hillyer of Macomb.

She was also preceded in death by one brother and two great-grandchildren.

She was a member of First Baptist Church of Mason City.

Memorials may be made to her church or to Mason City Area Nursing Home.


Maxine Walden

Maxine M. Walden, 67, of Lincoln died Wednesday (Sept. 17, 2003) at 6 a.m. at her home.

Her funeral was Saturday morning at Fricke-Calvert-Schrader Funeral Home in Lincoln, with the Rev. Jame Hahs officiating. Visitation was on Friday at the funeral home.

Burial is in New Union Cemetery, Lincoln.

Mrs. Walden began working at Logan County Title Company in 1954 for Lynn R. Parker and was working for his grandson, Brewster Parker, when she retired 40 years later as secretary for the company.

She was born March 9, 1936, at Emden to Conrad and Marie Rademaker. She married James E. Walden on Nov. 27, 1971, at St. Peter's Lutheran Church in Emden.

Survivors are her husband, of Lincoln; one brother, Lowell C. (and Mary Ruth) Rademaker of Emden; one sister, Marcello Brim of Emden; two brothers-in-law, Smith Walden of Wapella and Wendell (and June) Walden of Lake Barrington Shores; a sister-in-law, Helen (and Melvin) Gronewald of Golden; nephews David (and Sherie) Rademaker, Randall (and Debra) Brim, Joseph Walden, John (and Peggy) Walden, Jeff Walden and Ronald Gronewald; nieces Diane (and Kent) Kurtz, Debra (and Dennis) Moehring, Teresa Kastner, Alice Brim, Julie (and Roy) Schwarzenberg, Sharon Kuhna and Donna (and Richard) Wood; and 28 great-nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, grandparents and one niece.

She was a member of Lincoln Zonta Club from 1971 through 1977, served as president in 1978 and 1979, and was chairman of numerous committees, including chairmanship of the Zonta turkey dinner.

She was a member of First United Methodist Church in Lincoln.

She was confirmed at St. Peter's Lutheran Church in Emden in 1950. She taught Sunday school and sang in the choir many years.

She attended Emden Elementary School and graduated in 1954 from Hartem High School.

She enjoyed ballroom dancing, shopping and decorating her home in Lincoln and Florida.

She loved her family and friends and was loved by all who knew her, especially her immediate family and husband.

Memorials may be made to Hospice Care of Illinois, First United Methodist Church of Lincoln, Cancer Research Foundation or the donor's choice.

Samantha Shaffer

Samantha Marie Shaffer, 2-day-old daughter of Scott and Jennifer Richert Shaffer, former Lincoln residents, died Thursday (Sept. 18, 2003) at 1:25 p.m. at St. Frances Hospital in Peoria.

Family services at a later date will be private. The Rev. Dan Wissmann and the Rev. David Russell will officiate.

Burial will be in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Lincoln.

Samantha was born Sept. 16 in Peoria.

Survivors are her parents, of Heyworth; her maternal grandparents, Les and Theresa Richert of Lincoln; her paternal grandmother, Vera Shaffer of Chandler, Ariz.; maternal great-grandfather John Richert of Beason; three stepsisters, Tiffany, Jessica and Casey Shaffer of Mason City; and one stepbrother, Jeremy Shaffer of Mason City.

She was preceded in death by her paternal grandfather, Darrell Shaffer; paternal great-grandparents Leo and Ada Maston; and maternal great-grandparents Harold and Rose Durr and Viola Richert.

Mary Cale

Mary Colleen Kuhlmeier Cale, 54, of Lincoln died Thursday (Sept. 18, 2003) at 8:30 a.m. at her home.

She was cremated.

There will be no visitation.

Memorial services at a later date will be private. Craig Smith will officiate.

Mrs. Cale was registrar at Abraham Lincoln Memorial Hospital for six years.

She was born Oct. 26, 1948, at Quincy to Harvey and Ruth Irwin Kuhlmeier.

Survivors are her mother, Ruth Kuhlmeier Markword; three sons, Brian (and Kelly) Cale of Lincoln, Chad (and Lisa) Cale of Lincoln and Jeremy Cale of Rockford; one daughter, Amy (and Scott) Kuhlman of New Holland; five grandchildren; one sister, Barbara (and Jerry) Hadsell of Mendon; and one brother, Mark (and Vicki) Kuhlmeier of Quincy.

She was preceded in death by her father and stepfather.

She was a member of Jefferson Street Christian Church.

She graduated from Quincy High School in 1966.

Clinton Lee

Clinton Edward Lee, 21, of Quincy, formerly of Lincoln and Mattoon, died Tuesday (Sept. 16, 2003) at 4:18 p.m. at Memorial Medical Center in Springfield.

His funeral will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at Fricke-Calvert-Schrader Funeral Home in Lincoln, with Pastor Curtis Sutterfield officiating. Visitation was on Friday at the funeral home.

Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery, Lincoln.

Mr. Lee was production supervisor at Morman Feed Mill at Quincy.

He was born Feb. 8, 1982, at Decatur.

Survivors are his father, Charles Lee, and his  stepmother, Theresa Lee, of Lincoln; his mother, Kennelee Anne Lee of Aurora; one daughter, Kelsey Lyn Lee of Charleston; three sisters, Kourtney Anne Lee, Laura Lee and Trinity Lee, all of Lincoln; one brother, Douglas Ryan Redfern of Mattoon; his paternal grandparents, Charles and Carmen Lee of Fairfield; his maternal grandparents, Billy J. and Kennedene Anne Bryson of Pocahontas, Tenn.; and maternal great-grandparents George and Alberta Roberts of Mattoon.

He was preceded in death by his paternal great-grandparents.

He was a beloved son, father, brother, uncle and friend of many.
