'Bud' Sparling
William "Bud"
Sparling, 79, of Lincoln died Thursday (Sept. 25, 2003) at 8:30 a.m.
at his home.
Visitation will be
from 4 to 6 p.m. Friday at Fricke-Calvert-Schrader Funeral Home in
Lincoln. The rosary will be recited at 3:30 p.m.
His funeral will be
at 1 p.m. Saturday at Holy Family Catholic Church, with Father
Thomas Taylor officiating.
Burial, with military
rites, will be in Holy Cross Cemetery, Lincoln.
Mr. Sparling retired
in 1988 after 34 years as advertising manager for the Lincoln
Courier.
He served in the U.S.
Army Air Corps during World War II, from 1943 to 1946.
He was born Sept. 9,
1924, at Olney. He married Betty Pokorski on June 2, 1958, in
Lincoln.
Survivors are his
wife; two daughters, Sherry (and Richard) Wright of Monticello and
Nancy (and Raul) Rodriquez of Palatine; three grandchildren; three
sisters, Dorothea Schmidt of Lincoln, Rosalyn Widner of Rantoul and
Janice Sparling of Watseka; and four brothers, Wilmer R. Birk of
Lincoln, Bernard Birk of Houston, Texas, Donald Sparling of Watseka
and Martin Sparling of Arkansas.
He was preceded in
death by his father, Charles Sparling; his mother, Jessie Dufrain
Sparling Birk; and his stepfather, Wilmer L. Birk.
He was a member of
Holy Family Church of Lincoln.

MaryEllen Schreiber
MaryEllen Schreiber, 76, of Lincoln
died Monday (Sept. 22, 2003) at 1:03 p.m. at her home.
Her funeral was Thursday morning at Fricke-Calvert-Schrader Funeral Home in Lincoln, with
the Rev. Brian Leesman officiating. Visitation preceded the service.
A graveside service will be at 1 p.m.
Thursday at Chandlerville Cemetery, Chandlerville.
Mrs. Schreiber was the first secretary
for Zion Lutheran School in Lincoln.
She was born Feb. 20,
1927, at Decatur to Homer and Rose Myrtle Aumiller Eaton. She
married James E. Schreiber on Aug. 28, 1954, in Decatur. He preceded
her in death.
Survivors are two
sons, John E. (and Kelly) Schreiber of Lincoln and David (and Nykol)
Schreiber of Lincoln, and four grandchildren.
She was also preceded
in death by her parents and one brother.
She was a member of
St. John's Lutheran Church of Chandlerville and the Missionary
Society of Zion Lutheran Church of Lincoln.

Mildred Baker
Mildred N. Baker, 93, of Mason City
died Sunday (Sept. 21, 2003) at 12:18 a.m. at Mason City Area
Nursing Home.
Her funeral will be at 1:30 p.m.
Thursday at Hurley Funeral Home in Mason City. Visitation will be
one hour before the service.
Burial will be in Irish Grove Cemetery,
Sweetwater.
Mrs. Baker was a teacher.
She was born July 8, 1910, at
Middletown to Charles and Lillian May Mowry Newtson. She married
Glenn S. Baker on Aug. 31, 1936. He died Dec. 24, 2001.
Survivors are one granddaughter, Aisha
Post of Bristow, Va.; two great-grandchildren; and several nieces
and nephews.
She was also preceded in death by one
son, Samuel Baker; one daughter, Sandra Miller; one brother, Raymond
Newtson; a half brother, Henry Newtson; and two half sisters, Leota
Graff and Gladys Steinhour.
She was a member of Irish Grove
Presbyterian Church, Sweetwater.
Memorial

Charles Denton
Charles R. Denton, 87, of San Jose died
Tuesday (Sept. 23, 2003) at 6:35 p.m. at his home.
His funeral will be at 10 a.m. Friday
at Hurley Funeral Home in San Jose, with the Rev. Allen Payne
officiating. Visitation will be one hour before the service.
Burial will be in Kilbourne Cemetery,
Kilbourne.
Mr. Denton was a pipefitter in Chicago
and worked on building the Sears Tower.
He was a U.S. Navy veteran of the
Korean War.
He was born Jan. 8, 1916, in Petersburg
to Fred and Mary Denton. He married Verancia Oller on April 3, 1943,
in St. Louis, Mo. She died July 25, 2003.
Survivors are one stepson, Richard (and
Pat) Goben of Lake Delton, Ind.; two stepdaughters, Shirley (and
Art) Behrends of Mason City and Lavina Gay (and Clem) DeMatteis of
Pekin; 20 grandchildren; 31 great-grandchildren; six
great-great-grandchildren; and three brothers, Fred Denton of
Petersburg, Russell Denton of Petersburg and Carl Denton of Chicago.
He was also preceded in death by three
sisters and five brothers.
He was a member of Pipefitters Welfare
Fund Local 597.
Memorial

Orville Baker
Orville August Baker, 86, of
Morton, formerly of Lincoln, died Monday (Sept. 22, 2003) at 8:50
p.m. at his home.
Visitation will be from 5 to 8
p.m. Thursday at Fricke-Calvert-Schrader Funeral Home in Lincoln.
His funeral will be at 10:30
a.m. Friday at St. John United Church of Christ in Lincoln, with the
Rev. Richard Reinwald and the Rev. Wallace Reifsteck officiating.
Burial will be in New Union
Cemetery, Lincoln.
Mr. Baker was a lifelong farmer
of the family farm in Logan County.
He was born July 20, 1917, in
Lincoln to Frank L. and Rena Coorts Baker. He married Frances
Buchholz on Feb. 10, 1940, in Lincoln.
Survivors are his wife, of
Morton; one son, Dr. Donald (and wife Mari Jo) Baker of Morton; one
daughter, Reanne (and David) Shive of Rockford; eight grandchildren,
Kara Baker (and Brad) Johnson, Valerie Baker (and Marc) Squillante,
Mark Baker, Dr. Mari Baker and Chris Baker, all of Morton, and
Matthew (and Susie) Shive, Reannon Shive and Janna Shive, all of
Rockford; and one great-granddaughter, Hannah Johnson.
He was a member of St. John
United Church of Christ in Lincoln, where he served on the church
council for several terms, was secretary-treasurer of the
Brotherhood and a member of Pairs and Spares. He was also a member
of the Logan County Farm Bureau.

Jane
Stahlhut
Jane H. Stahlhut, 83,
of Lincoln died Saturday (Sept. 20, 2003) at Memorial Medical Center
in Springfield.
Visitation was on
Wednesday at Holland and Barry Funeral Home in
Lincoln.
Her funeral was Thursday
morning at St. John United Church of Christ.
Mrs. Stahlhut was a
homemaker, and after raising her own daughters, she was a foster
parent to more than 200 foster children over 19 years. Additionally,
she and her husband were master foster parents for many years and
taught foster parent classes throughout central Illinois for DCFS.
She was born Feb. 25,
1920, in Chicago, to Paul and Augusta Going Sherman. She married
Emil O. Stahlhut on Feb. 14, 1941, in Oak Park, and they were
married for over 62 years. He survives.
Other survivors are
four daughters, Carolyn (and Jerry) Frank of Springfield, Barbara
(and Mel) Thake of Bloomington, Peggy (and Mike) Webster of Urbana
and Mary (and Bob) Shattuck of Lincoln; a foster daughter, Debbie
Goacher of Centerville, Ind.; and six grandchildren, Mary Beth Thake,
Bill Thake, Nathan Frank, Craig Shattuck, Emily Shattuck and Maggie
Shattuck.
She was preceded in
death by an infant granddaughter, Margorie Thake.
She was a member of
St. John United Church of Christ in Lincoln. She also was a member
of the League of Women Voters and was an active volunteer for Girl
Scouts for many years.
She took great pride
in her children and grandchildren and always encouraged them. She
was a parent to the stranger and to all who passed through her door.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made
to Abraham Lincoln Memorial Hospital or St. John United Church of
Christ.
