Embrace complacency or change for positive growth    Send a link to a friend

To the editor:

I believe the Super Wal-Mart would be a good fit for this community. Our society is built upon free commerce, not protectionism. I say, bring Wal-Mart in and you will gain many out-of-town shoppers.

Keeping one business out to protect the interest of others is approaching competition from a standpoint of fear. The smaller groceries still have their own competitive advantages and may offer services that Wal-Mart does not. Other businesses may need to adjust their strategies, but isn't that what competition is all about? Maybe the introduction of further competition could fuel some innovation where businesses and people have embraced complacency. If keeping all things the same is progress, and competition is considered deadly, then our town is destined to fade into obscurity.

[to top of second column in this letter]

I applaud the mayor for her push for growth in the community and ask those in voting capacity to consider the consequences of their decisions. Future major residents and businesses may no longer consider Lincoln a favorable site if we continue the current mentality. I personally would like to see change and positive growth for the community.
