Mountain lions and trumpeter swans are topics of two seminars at
Bald Eagle Appreciation Days

KEOKUK, Iowa -- Mountain lions and trumpeter
swans will be the subjects of wildlife seminars offered during Bald Eagle
Appreciation Days this weekend. Ron Andrews, of the Iowa Department of
Natural Resources, will be in Keokuk on Saturday to give the two seminars.
His presentations will be near the Plaza Cinema in River City Mall and are
free to the public.

The
first seminar, at 11 a.m., will be an update on mountain lion
sightings and a status report to date. Besides history and current
status of mountain lions, the program will include mountain lion
biology, how to identify mountain lion signs and sightings, and what
the public should do if they encounter a mountain lion. The second
seminar, at 2 p.m., will be an update on the current status of
trumpeter swans in Iowa. The Trumpeter Swan Restoration Program
began in 1995 with a goal of 15 free-flying, nesting trumpeter
swans by 2003. That goal has been reached, and the program's new
goal is 25 nesting pairs by 2006. A phenomenal partnership effort by
the public and the Iowa Department of Natural Resources has made the
program successful. The slogan "Trumpeting the Cause for Wetlands"
helps the department promote the many values of wetlands, including
the fact that wetlands are the most diverse habitat in existence.
A question-and-answer session will follow each presentation.

Andrews graduated from Iowa State University in 1967 with a
bachelor of science degree in fisheries and wildlife biology. Since
1968 he has been furbearer research specialist for what is now the
Iowa Department of Natural Resources.
His presentations are a part of the
Bald Eagle Appreciation Days celebration Saturday and Sunday,
sponsored by the Keokuk Area Convention & Tourism Bureau and the Lee
County Conservation Board.
