LINCOLN -- Gene R. Peck, 86, died Tuesday, Jan. 25, 2005,
at 11 p.m. at Maple Ridge Care Centre.
Visitation will be from 3 to 5 p.m. Sunday at Holland and
Barry Funeral Home.
His funeral will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Holland and Barry,
with the Rev. Jame Hahs officiating.
Burial will be in Zion Cemetery.
Mr. Peck operated Peck and Son Heating and Cooling, was
maintenance supervisor at Lincoln College for 20 years and was
a sheet metal worker.
He was a U.S. Air Force veteran of World War II.
He was born March 6, 1918, at Canton to Elmer E. and Dolly
V. Clayton Peck. He married Ethel E. Esterline in Biloxi,
Miss., on April 12, 1944. She died Dec. 22, 1996.
He is survived by two sons, Michael F. Peck of Lincoln and
David G. Peck (and Mary) Polson of Camp Hill, Pa., and two
stepdaughters, Anna and Rachel, both of Camp Hill, Pa.
He attended the United Methodist Church and was a member of
the Elks Club.

MOUNT PULASKI -- Sheila Rae
Mardis, 58, of Mount Pulaski died Sunday, Jan. 23, 2005, at
8:10 p.m. at St. John's Hospital North in Springfield.
Visitation was on Wednesday at
Fricke-Calvert-Schrader Funeral Home in Mount Pulaski.
Her funeral was Thursday morning at the First
Christian Church of Mount Pulaski, with John Robertson
officiating.
Burial is in Steenbergen Cemetery, rural Mount
Pulaski.
Mrs. Mardis was a retired high school English teacher. She
had taught at Hartsburg-Emden and at North Shelby High School
in Shelbyville, Mo.
She was born Jan. 30, 1946, in Logan County to Virgil
"Skeet" Wayne and Maurine Elizabeth Green Wilham. She married
Clarence T. Mardis in Shelbyville, Mo., on Feb. 14, 1988.
She is survived by her husband, of Mount Pulaski; one son,
Jerod Jeffrey (and Amanda) Wilham Fults of Lincoln; one
granddaughter, Kelsey Ann Fults of Mount Pulaski; and one
brother, Darrell Allen (and Kathleen) Wilham of Shelbina, Mo.
She was preceded in death by her parents; one brother,
Ronnie Wayne Wilham; and one sister, Beth McPeak.
She was a member of the First Christian Church of Mount
Pulaski, ABWA of Mount Pulaski, American Legion Ladies
Auxiliary, VFW Ladies Auxiliary, Mount Pulaski Historical
Society, Red Hat Society and Moose Lodge of Chicago.
Memorials may be made to the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer
Foundation or the First Christian Church of Mount Pulaski.

LINCOLN -- James Robert "J.R."
Ewins, 19, of Lincoln, died Saturday, Jan. 22, 2005, at 10:40
a.m. at Davenport, Iowa.
Visitation will be from 4 to 8
p.m. Thursday at Holland and Barry Funeral Home, with Masonic
rites at 7:30 p.m.
His funeral will be at 10:30
a.m. Friday at the First Baptist Church, with the Rev. Robert
Henderson officiating.
Burial will be in Parklawn
Cemetery, Danvers.
Mr. Ewins was a second-year
student at Grinnell College in Grinnell, Iowa, majoring in
religion and medicine.
He was born April 22, 1985, in
Lincoln to John R. and Deborah L. Parrish Ewins.
He is survived by his parents;
one sister, Jennifer Reneé Ewins of Lincoln; his paternal
grandmother, Mildred Ewins of Bloomington; his maternal
grandparents, Robert and Wilma Parrish of Lincoln; paternal
great-grandmother Kathryn Ewins of Carlock; maternal
great-grandmother Eunice Meridith of Lebanon; and several
aunts, uncles and cousins.
He was preceded in death by
his paternal grandfather, James R. Ewins.
He was a member of the First
Baptist Church of Lincoln, Abraham Shrine 100 of Lincoln and
Masonic Lodge 653 of Greenview.
While attending college, he
was a computer technical assistant, peer mediator, student
assistant and worked campus security. He was also a member of
the college choir.
In 2004 he traveled to China
with the National Youth Leadership Forum to study medicine.
He was a 2003 graduate of
Lincoln Community High School, where he was a peer mediator,
on the student council and played tennis.
He had also been president of
the American Baptist Youth Board, Great Rivers Region for the
states of Illinois and Missouri and was a camp counselor for
Lake Springfield Baptist Camp.
