[July 06, 2007]  MOUNT PULASKI -- Eugene Ellis Downing, 95, of Mount Pulaski died Friday, July 6, 2007, at 1:34 a.m. at Vonderlieth Living Center.

Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Monday at Mount Pulaski Christian Church. A Masonic service will follow at 7 p.m. His funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the church, with Jeremy Thomason and Bill Shanle officiating.

Burial, with military rites, will be in Mount Pulaski Cemetery.

Fricke-Calvert-Schrader Funeral Home in Mount Pulaski is handling arrangements.

Mr. Downing was owner of Downing Insurance Agency, which is now Downing, Przykopanski, Clements and May Insurance Agency in Mount Pulaski. He also taught grade school and high school and was a farm manager.

He was a first lieutenant in the U.S. Army, serving from 1941 to 1946, during World War II.

He was born March 11, 1912, in Mount Pulaski to Ellis Charles and Leona Ethel Ryan Downing. He married Zedna Livingston in Iberia, Mo., on June 14, 1941. She preceded him in death on Jan. 4, 1960. He married Maxine Campbell Schultz in Mount Pulaski on Jan 26, 1967.

He is survived by his wife, of Mount Pulaski; one son, William Ellis (and Diana) Downing of Redmond, Wash.; one stepson, Michael Dean (and Janice E.) Schultz of Omaha, Neb.; one stepdaughter, Denise Diane (and Scott) Traver of Rhinebeck, N.Y.; six grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

He was also preceded in death by two brothers and two sisters.

He was a member of Mount Pulaski Christian Church, Mount Pulaski Masonic Blue Lodge AF & AM, Logan County Shrine, Springfield Ansar Shrine, Mount Pulaski American Legion Post 447, Mount Pulaski Township Historical Society and was a Paul Harris Rotarian.

Memorials may be made to Mount Pulaski American Legion Post 447 or Mount Pulaski Christian Church.
