Mardi Gras on Saturday [February 01, 2008] St. John United Church of Christ is jumping Mardi Gras up a few days this year. Traditionally Mardi Gras, or "Fat Tuesday," is the day before Ash Wednesday, the beginning of Lent. St. John Church is moving its celebration to 5 p.m. Saturday. Activities include ornament and shoebox float contests and the climactic breaking of the pinata. Hats, beads and decorations will abound in Mardi Gras colors of purple, gold and green. A penny a vote chooses the reigning royalty. King contestants are Perry Hahn, Dave Schneider and Jim Wilmert. Vying for queen are Nancy Gehlbach, Carolyn Pech and Lynn Spellman. The prince will be chosen from among Brady Curry, Matthew Goetsch and Seth Johnson, and princess from Savannah Conrady, Alison Pagel and Lindsey Sanders. Children will participate in face painting, youth bingo and breaking the pinata. Adults will play bingo and pinochle. A potluck dinner, with barbecues and hot chicken sandwiches provided, will start off the evening. St. John Charity Guild is sponsoring the event. At 7:30 p.m. Feb. 6, St. John Church will have its Ash Wednesday service, including communion, with the Rev. Rich Reinwald officiating. [Text from file received from Lynn Spellman] On Earth...:
