Catharine Read

[September 15, 2008]  Catharine Read, 97, of Lincoln, died Friday, Sept. 12, 2008, at 4:45 p.m. at St. Clara's Manor.

Her funeral will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Fricke-Calvert-Schrader Funeral Home in Lincoln, with the Rev. Mark Thompson officiating. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service.

Burial will be in Kline Cemetery, Broadwell.

Mrs. Read was a sales clerk, office manager and homemaker.

She was born June 20, 1911, in Los Angeles, Calif., to Friedrich and Bertha Augusta Balzerick Mahler. She married Boyd Day Read on Aug. 24, 1938, in Lincoln. He preceded her in death on July 23, 2001.

She is survived by two sons, Lyle Boyd (and Phillis) Read of New Holland and John Paul Read of Stillwater, Minn., and two sisters, Ida F. Stabbe of Lincoln and Bernice L. Hackett, both of Lincoln.

She was also preceded in death by one daughter, Nancy Kaye Read; two brothers, John Adam and Paul Richard Mahler; and one granddaughter, Hannah Day Read.

She was a member of Zion Lutheran Church of Lincoln, the Ladies Aid at the church and Lincoln Junior Woman's Club. She was also a member of various high school organizations.

Memorials may be made to Zion Lutheran Church in Lincoln or St. Clara's Manor.
