Relay for Life, blood drive, Lincoln Air Rifle Klub and Junior Master Gardeners make Close Up

[June 19, 2009]  Reminder: Everyone is invited to Relay for Life. The event starts tonight with volunteers on the track of Lincoln Community High School from 6 pm on Friday, June 19, through 6 am Saturday, June 20. The heavy rains won't stop this event as it will be held inside the LCHS gymnasium.


Blood drive at Faith Lutheran Church, 2320 N. Kickapoo St., noon-5 pm Tuesday, June 23. Call Pat at 735-4837 for an appointment or more information. Refreshments will be served by the Dorcas Guild.


Lincoln Air Rifle Klub meets upstairs at the Lincoln VFW, Fifth Street: 6-8 pm Tuesdays. Participants learn firearm safety, marksmanship and team competition shooting. Initial participants must be accompanied by an adult guardian. 


Reminder: University of Illinois Extension office in Logan County is offering two different Junior Master Gardener programs this summer. To register for these classes, please stop by the Logan County Extension office, 980 N. Postville Drive in Lincoln, between 8 am and 4:30 pm Monday-Friday or call 217-732-8289. Junior Master Gardeners (Level 1) (Current third, fourth, fifth grade)

Time: Tuesday-Thursday, June 23-25, 10-11:30 am

Cost: $15 per participant

Age: Children who were enrolled in third, fourth or fifth grade during the 2008-2009 school year

This program, modeled after the highly successful Master Gardener program, offers hands-on group and individual activities. Youth will learn about plant growth and development, soils and water, insects and disease, and environmental horticulture and ecology. Maximum of 15 participants will be accepted.

JMG Bird's Eye View (ages 7-9)

Time: Tuesday-Thursday, June 23-25, 1:30-3 pm

Cost: $15 per participant

At the JMG Literature in the Garden program, garden-related books will be used to inspire learning about birds through discussion, hands-on and fun activities, including a bird walk at Kickapoo Creek Park (date to be announced). Topics will be different birds and plants that attract birds. Participants will each receive bird books to keep as their own. There will also be fun and exciting activities, followed by a creative snack at each of the sessions. A maximum of 15 will be accepted for this class.
