Dern-Ladd family honored with Walk of Fame stars

[November 02, 2010]  LOS ANGELES (AP) -- It was a family affair Monday for Laura Dern, her father Bruce Dern and mother Diane Ladd.

The acting dynasty was honored during a ceremony along the Hollywood Walk of Fame, marking the first time three stars were dedicated to family members at the same time.

The pink terrazzo stars were unveiled alongside each other outside the W Hotel Hollywood along Hollywood Boulevard.

"I ask the universe that these three stars right here -- when I'm dead and gone or if I'm still alive -- that whoever comes and looks at it or stands on it, may the energy of the three of our lives permeate into their foundation and help each and every one fulfill their destiny with joy and love, as I wish for you," the 74-year-old Ladd told the crowd.

Laura Dern, who has starred in such films as "Jurassic Park" and "October Sky" was born in 1967 to Bruce Dern and Ladd, who were married for nine years and have both remarried.

It's not the first time the family has made Hollywood history. Laura Dern and Ladd both received Oscar nominations in 1992 for their roles in "Rambling Rose," the first time a mother and daughter had nods together.

Ladd has also received Oscar nominations for "Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore" and "Wild at Heart," while Bruce Dern was nominated for "Coming Home."

"To put it into sports parlance, because I'm a big sports person, my feeling is that all of you that were connected with this got together and said, 'Oh, Bruce Dern, he could play,'" the 74-year-old character actor told the crowd.

Laura Dern said her husband, musician Ben Harper, who filed for divorce from the 43-year-old actress last month after nearly five years of marriage, originated the idea of the family being honored.

It meant "the world to me and my parents and our children." she said.

Mark Ruffalo, who costarred with Laura Dern in "We Don't Live Here Anymore," joked the three-star ceremony was like a "religious experience" and called the family "the father, the daughter and the holy spirit."
