Gary May

[October 28, 2011]  HARTSBURG -- Gary L. May, 73, of Hartsburg, died Thursday, Oct. 27, 2011, at 2 p.m. at St. Clara's Manor in Lincoln after a courageous fight with cancer.

His wishes were to be cremated. There will be no services.

Arrangements are by Fricke-Calvert-Schrader Funeral Home in Lincoln.

Mr. May operated Gary's Deep Rock Service Station on Woodlawn Road in Lincoln from 1958 to 1988. He retired in 2005 from the Illinois Department of Agriculture, where he worked as an inspector.

He was a Marine Corps veteran.

He was born on March 23, 1938, in Macon County to Carl and Geneva Woolums May. He married Vicki L. Downing on Nov. 18, 1985, in Lincoln. She preceded him in death on June 26, 2010.

He is survived by two daughters, Angela (and Mark) Kattelman of Normal and Teresa Holaric of Bloomington; two grandsons, Case Rocco and Tyler Holaric; one brother, Donald "Pete" (and Judy) May of Lincoln; and one sister, Connie Madigan of Lincoln.

He was also preceded in death by his parents.

He enjoyed NASCAR, horse racing and was an avid basketball fan.

Gary was a good-hearted person and never knew a stranger.

The family thanks all of the personnel at St. Clara's Manor for the wonderful care they gave to Gary.
