The nation's weather

[September 15, 2011]  (AP)  Another chilly weather day is expected from the northern Plains through much of the Great Lakes and the Ohio Valley on Thursday as a cold high pressure system from the north settles in over the Midwest.

The cold air mass accompanying this system will allow areas of North Dakota, northern Minnesota and northern Wisconsin to see morning lows ranging from the mid-20s to mid-30s. Many areas from the Dakotas through western Wisconsin will remain under various frost advisories and freeze watches and warnings through the morning. Daytime highs in the northern Plains and upper Midwest will remain below seasonal averages with highs in the 50s. The Ohio Valley will be slightly warmer with highs in the upper 50s to 60s.

Ahead of this system, showers and thunderstorms will accompany a cold front as it moves into the eastern third of the nation and extends from the Northeast through northern Texas. Waves of low pressure along this system will enhance precipitation in the Tennessee and Ohio Valley. Expect cooler weather after this front to exit eastward during the next couple of days. Meanwhile, a second cold front will push across the lower Great Lakes with light to moderate showers.

In the West, the disturbance in the Desert Southwest will advance into the southern High Plains with areas of showers and thunderstorms through the day. The central and southern Rockies should expect the brunt of this activity.

Temperatures in the Lower 48 states Wednesday ranged from a morning low of 24 degrees at Hazen, N.D., to a high of 102 degrees at Killeen/Fort Hood, Texas
