[October 10, 2012]  LEWISTOWN -- What was it like to attend a one-room school? As part of the Spoon River Reads project, Dickson Mounds Museum and the Fulton County Arts Council will present "Life as a Student in a One Room School" on Saturday. Visitors will learn about the history of one-room schools in Fulton County. Participants may come dressed in 19th-century or early 20th-century garb and enjoy a hands-on craft project.

Both the East and West Waterford schools on the museum grounds will be open to the public to view the exhibits between 1 and 3 p.m., with ongoing children’s activities in the East Waterford School only.

Admission is free, but donations are welcome.

This program is a collaborative effort between Dickson Mounds Museum, the Fulton County Arts Council and the Spoon River Reads project. The Fulton County Arts Council is partially funded by the Illinois Arts Council, a state agency.

The Illinois State Museum -- Dickson Mounds is located between Lewistown and Havana, off Illinois Routes 78 and 97. The museum is open free to the public from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. every day. Tours and special programs are available for groups with reservations.
