According to the National Ag Statistics Service, U.S. farmers have now completed 86 percent of the nation's corn planting, compared with 71 percent last week. In Illinois, farmers are now 89 percent done with corn planting, compared with 74 percent one week ago. The bottom line is in spite of heavy rains and cooler temperatures, farmers are making progress in their planting. However, these same heavy rains may be causing some issues of their own. On Tuesday, many a field along Illinois Route 10 was wet to the point of being soggy, and many had water standing in newly sprouted cornfields. Photos by Nila Smith (Click to enlarge images.) |
