Within the city of
Lincoln, the appointment of the heads for the
various city departments is done annually at the
recommendation of the Mayor. This is always done in
May, at the beginning of the new fiscal year. On
Monday, May 20th, Mayor Tracy Welch asked for
approval of the reappointment of Lincoln Police
Chief Joe Meister, Fire Chief Aaron Ty Johnson,
Street and Alley Superintendent Walt Landers and
Building and Zoning Officer Wes Woodhall. The head
of the Lincoln Sewer Department, Andrew Bowns is an
employee of Veolia and not subject to vote.
All eight aldermen were present and voted
unanimously for the re-appointment of Meister and
Johnson. Landers and Woodhall were each approved
with votes of seven in favor and one against.
Alderman Craig Eimer voted no in both instances.
Following the voting each department head was sworn
into service to the city by City Attorney John
Hoblit. Fire Chief Johnson was not present on the
20th, and took his oath on Tuesday, May 28th at the
beginning of the city committee of the whole
meeting.

At the Tuesday, May 21st meeting
of the Logan County Board, members heard from New
Holland Village President Annie Coers about a plan
to build affordable housing in New Holland. The
proposal included the purchase of the old New
Holland High School that currently belongs to the
Merriman family. The building would be demolished
and the land where it stands plus an adjoining piece
behind the school would be developed into apartment
units.
