Lincoln College volleyball season ends

[OCT. 31, 2002]  CHAMPAIGN —Top-seeded Parkland ended the Lincoln College volleyball season, downing the Lynx in three games here on Wednesday night. Parkland posted wins of 30-14, 30-15 and 30-19.

"Parkland played an excellent match from start to finish," said Mark Tippett, coach for the Lincoln team. "Their servers did a great job of disrupting our passing game, and we were never able to get into a rhythm offensively.

"We never gave up and fought hard the entire match. I am proud of the way the girls played this season, and I enjoyed working with this team very much."

Amanda Hansen had three kills and a pair of blocks, while Janine Buettner had four kills and two digs. Amy Cox contributed three kills and two blocks, while Lincoln High School graduate Angela Maestas was credited with three digs.

Lincoln College completed its season with a record of 16-27.

Redbirds ranked fourth in Valley men’s basketball poll

[OCT. 31, 2002]  ST. LOUIS, Mo. — The Illinois State men’s basketball team was picked for fourth in the 2002 Missouri Valley Conference according to a preseason poll of the conference’s sports information directors, beat writers and radio play-by-play broadcasters. The vote was announced at the Valley Basketball Media Day on Tuesday.

The Redbirds received 205 points in the poll, trailing No. 1 Creighton, with 290; No. 2 Southern Illinois, 274; and No. 3 Wichita State, 208. Last year, the Redbirds finished third in the final 2001-2002 league standings, despite losing Tarise Bryson, the 2001 Valley Player of the Year, to a wrist injury.

Baboucarr Bojang, a 6-9 forward from Greenville, S.C., was named to the 2002-03 Valley Preseason All-Conference Team. Last year he was a second team all-conference and all-newcomer selection, averaging 13.2 points and 7.6 boards per game.

Illinois State hosts its first exhibition game, against Southern Illinois-Edwardsville, on Monday, Nov. 4, at Redbird Arena, with a 7:05 p.m. tipoff. The Redbirds open regular-season action on Saturday, Nov. 23, with a home game against Utah State, scheduled for 7:05 p.m.

Cook, Howard to sit two games

[OCT. 31, 2002]  CHAMPAIGN — University of Illinois senior forward Brian Cook and junior guard Jerrance Howard will have to sit out the first two regular-season games of the 2002-03 men’s basketball season for committing an NCAA violation by inadvertently participating in a non-sanctioned tournament this past summer.

"We received information that Brian and Jerrance played in an unsanctioned tournament this summer before asking for permission," head coach Bill Self said. "We reported the information to the NCAA in July, and now the players and team are paying the consequences."

Both players will miss the Nov. 24 season opener against Lehigh and the Nov. 27 home game against Arkansas-Pine Bluff.
