Susan Brewer, a professor in the U of I
Department of Food Science and Human Nutrition, dealt with human
evaluation of swine waste odor.
The project was part of a $6 million
effort funded by C-FAR on swine odor and waste management. The
results of many of the studies will be presented Dec. 11-12 at the U
of I Pork Industry Conference. People interested in attending the
conference should contact Gilbert Hollis at (217) 333-0013 or
hollisg@uiuc.edu.
Brewer's work focused on correlating
chemical identification of odorous compounds with odor offensiveness
of the air in and around swine houses as determined by a panel and
on establishing an odor evaluation panel based on dilution
olfactometry.

"This project was linked closely with
two other projects," she explained, referring to other parts of the
overall C-FAR program. "In addition, this project provided an
analytical service for other efforts in the program dealing with
testing the efficacy of various odor-reduction strategies."
Brewer said
that the study has produced the methods, equipment and human
resources for human evaluation of odor offensiveness and strength.
