[JULY 14, 2003]  URBANA -- Agronomy Day 2003 at the University of Illinois is scheduled for Thursday, Aug. 21. The event features four tours on the latest developments in agricultural research, as well as numerous tent displays.

This 47th consecutive Agronomy Day at the U of I is a partnership among several academic units in College of Agricultural, Consumer and Environmental Sciences. The theme for this year's event is "Agriculture at the Crossroads."

"This year, we have attempted to highlight the many aspects of agriculture that so profoundly affect everyone in the state," said Aaron Hager, U of I weed scientist and Agronomy Day chairman. "While continuing to present the latest in research for production agriculture, we have incorporated numerous tour stops and tent displays that examine some of the hottest issues for the public, from new crop disease and insect threats to the efforts to reduce the impact of agriculture on the environment."

The Agronomy Day program will feature four different tours of research projects. One tour will focus on soybean rust, 50 years of research on supersweet corn, scab-resistant wheat varieties, soybean planting dates and soybean aphids. A second tour will cover soybean cyst nematodes, nitrogen best management practices, secondary insect pests, soybean diseases and corn hybrids with low aflatoxin in grain.

Additional topics for a third tour include control of winter annual weeds, multiple herbicide resistance in waterhemp, resistance to European corn borers, western corn rootworms and improving corn yield with less nitrogen inputs. A final tour will feature managing diseases in vegetable crops, Illinois fruit crops, variable rate control in manure application, atmospheric transport of hog odor and controlling fertilizer applications.

The Agronomy Day activities will be at the Crop Sciences Research and Education Center, which is located south of the U of I's main Urbana-Champaign campus off St. Mary's Road on Wright Street extended.

Agronomy Day will begin at 7 a.m. Hour-long wagon tours around the research plots will repeat every half hour as groups are available. The last tour will leave at noon. Lunch will be provided at a nominal charge.
