I-55 semitrailer fire     Send a link to a friend

[JULY 14, 2003]  Three fire departments responded to a semitrailer fire off Interstate 55 Saturday. Lincoln Rural, Lincoln and Atlanta fire departments attended to the incident from 12:41 to 2:50 p.m.

The driver of the truck pulled the rig off  I-55 onto the southbound ramp at Exit 133, northeast of Lincoln, when he smelled smoke. The smoke smelled of plastic.

He reported that he had taken a smelly container -- motor oil or starter fluid and old rags -- from the tractor and put them in the rear cargo area in the trailer when he was stopped at Pontiac around 9:30-10:30 a.m.

The truck was shipping shelving equipment. It was owned by Associate Incorporated of Irving, Texas. No estimate was available, but the trailer and contents were considered a total loss.
