Tired of telemarketing calls?     Send a link to a friend

[JULY 15, 2003]  Are you frustrated when you answer your phone only to find that it is someone trying to sell you something or ask for a donation? You can do something to stop those nuisance calls that is easy and free. Below you will find more information and links to the National Do Not Call Registry.

Basics

If your telephone number is listed in the National Do Not Call Registry, most telemarketers will be required to remove your number from their call lists. Beginning Oct. 1, it will be illegal for most telemarketers to call numbers listed in the registry.

Cost

You can register your home and mobile phone numbers free.

Timing

If you register by Aug. 31, most telemarketers must stop calling your number effective Oct 1. If you register Sept. 1 or later, most telemarketers must stop calling your number three months after you register. Registration is effective for five years.

Exceptions

Listing your number in the national registry will not stop all telemarketing calls. You may still receive calls from charities, telephone surveyors, political organizations and companies with which you have an established business relationship.
