Lincoln Christian College announces new
athletic director and men's basketball coach

[JUNE 9, 2003]  Kevin Crawford, vice president of finance at Lincoln Christian College, has announced John Searby as the new athletic director and head men's basketball coach at Lincoln Christian College. Searby began his duties on June 2.

Searby is a 1998 graduate of Milligan College in Johnson City, Tenn. He was a two-year starter at Milligan, helped the team to the NAIA National Tournament and in his senior year served as team captain. Since Milligan, he has served at Gardner-Webb University (NCAA, Division II) as an assistant coach and at Tennessee Tech University (NCAA, Division I) as an assistant coach under former University of North Carolina star Jeff Lebo. Tennessee Tech won back-to-back OVC titles and advanced to the quarterfinals of the NIT during Searby's tenure.

Tennessee Tech coach Lebo commented: "One does not find the caliber of a staff member like John Searby easily. He will be a fine addition to any staff or institution that he is involved with or represents. I have appreciated his loyalty, his supreme work effort, his enthusiasm and his teamwork mentality. His desire for academic success and his enjoyment in relating to students, faculty and administration makes him a solid candidate for any position that he desires."

John Searby and his wife, Jessi, move to Lincoln from Colorado Springs, Colo., where he taught English and served as assistant varsity coach and freshmen head coach at Widefield High School. Widefield advanced to the 2003 Class 4A regional finals.

Searby is a 1994 graduate of University High School in Normal. He received his bachelor's degree in English and history education from Milligan College in 1998 and his master's degree in English from Tennessee Tech University in 2002.

LCC, located on Route 10 on the east side of Lincoln, is accredited by the Accrediting Association of Bible Colleges and the Commission of Institutions of Higher Education of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools.

The college is a member of the National Christian College Athletic Association and participates in six intercollegiate sports: men's basketball, women's basketball, volleyball, men's soccer, women's soccer and men's baseball.

[JUNE 9, 2003]  I don't know how many major league players read the LDN (but, who could blame 'em?), but it may be more than we originally thought. How's that? Well, take for instance, last week's column. In it, we discussed how the Cubs would need to hold their own with the D-Rays and the Yanks and that the Cardinals would really have to make some hay while playing at home. Both teams did just that. So, the LDN would like to thank whoever is responsible for getting that message out. It's always exciting when our local source intended primarily for area fans oozes into such places as professional locker rooms. I never thought we'd ever get that close to the action and have inside sources. Since we're so inside… does anybody have any stock market tips for us?

Note: One other Cardinal note of interest… Stopper Jason Isringhausen threw another great inning down at AA Tennessee, lending speculation that Izzy could rejoin the Birds sometime this week in Boston or at Yankee Stadium… Does that sound weird to you National League purists or what???

Basketball camp dates announced

[MAY 14, 2003]  NORMAL -- First-year Illinois State head basketball coach Porter Moser has announced his camp dates for the summer of 2003.

Moser and his Redbird staff will host three camps this summer, with a pair of day camps and one team camp.

The first day camp runs June 16-19 and is for boys entering grades 1-12. The second day camp is open to boys entering grades 1-8 and is scheduled for July 15-18. The day camps are designed for commuters only and focus on the basic fundamentals of dribbling, passing, shooting, rebounding, defense and game play.

The cost for either day camp is $170. Each camper receives a basketball and a T-shirt.

The team camp, which caters to high school and junior high teams with boys entering grades 6-12, will be June 20-22. The camp format is round-robin and tournament team play.

The cost for the team camp is $170 for commuters and $205 for resident campers. Each will receive a camp T-shirt.
