Four Illinois Dept. of Human Services facilities to be improved     Send a link to a friend

[OCT. 31, 2003]  SPRINGFIELD -- Gov. Rod R. Blagojevich announced Thursday he was authorizing the release of $7.6 million in capital 2002 funds for construction work at four state-operated facilities serving people with mental illness and developmental disabilities. The projects involve making improvements and repairs to buildings and systems at the four facilities.

"These facilities are in need of renovation, not only for energy efficiency improvements, but also improvements that will help save funds in the long run," said Gov. Blagojevich.

Chester Mental Health Center -- $313,596

The project calls for replacing the smoke and heat detectors and updating the fire alarm system to meet codes. Chester Mental Health Center is one of nine state-operated residential centers for people with mental illness. The facility has 282 residents and 470 staff.

Fox Developmental Center -- $1 million

This project calls for rehabilitating the interior of the main and administration buildings at Dwight. Also included in the work will be the replacement of flooring, doors and frames. It also provides for the abatement of asbestos-containing materials. Fox Developmental Center is one of nine state-operated residential centers for people whose disabilities are complicated by severe medical or behavioral needs. The facility has 167 residents and 265 staff.

Jacksonville Developmental Center -- $700,000

This project calls for improvements to the mechanical components of the coal-burning power plant that generates power for the Jacksonville facility. The work also includes removal of asbestos-containing materials. The facility has 265 residents and 529 staff.

Murray Developmental Center -- $2.7 million

This project calls for renovating the 40 year old boiler house, including upgrading the coal- and ash-handling systems and stokers and replacing pumps and other equipment. The work also includes removal of asbestos-containing materials. The Centralia facility has 350 residents and 665 staff.
